Re: Settling on a Setting
I don't know if this is an option since you didn't post it but, I think rather than a modern setting this could actually benefit from a SciFi setting, travelling between planets along the galaxy rather than locations in a single planet. That could solve some problems that Mammon mentioned since the...

Re: Settling on a Setting
The cell phones and cars thing is something you labelled as a pro for the modern era, which means that your story actually benefits from it. That's of course true depending on the story. I'd usually call it a vice, though. In between Big Brother surveillance of the MC's phone, the fact that those i...

Settling on a Setting
I have a weird problem. I know the basics of the story I want to write, but the setting/time period is what I'm having trouble settling on. The plot is basically this. Guy meets a mysterious girl. Girl is the chosen of an ancient prophesy. Girl is being hunted by empire (Good reason? Bad reason? Who...

Dialogue. Am I doing it wrong
I just started coding my game, here's a sample of what I'm doing. show argus_smile with Dissolve(.3) a "...and that's why Grandma stopped calling." hide argus_smile show cecille_heh c "..." hide cecille_heh show tom_heh with Dissolve(.3) show tom_smile "..." hide tom_smile show tom_heh t "eheh..." h...

Large backgrounds, Camera Angles
So for my game, my screen size is 1280 x 720. My background is larger than that. That's not the problem. When the scene changes to a new background, I would like to control where the camera (the player's view) starts, be pointed at a specific part of the background. Like in a gym, the camera angle s...

Re: In-Game Menu Editting/Screen Creation
Not sure what the error is from. You can put any of the UI elements in screen language in place of "# your code goes here" and it should work, even 'null' if you just want an empty screen. Found the problem. I tried again in a fresh project and the code worked. In my original project I deleted the ...

Re: In-Game Menu Editting/Screen Creation
Look into vpgrid for the scrolling list, the rest could be done in multiple ways but you should be able to find most everything you need on these pages: https://www.renpy.org/doc/html/screens.html https://www.renpy.org/doc/html/screen_actions.html I got the button to work, but every time it's press...

In-Game Menu Editting/Screen Creation
I'm still pretty new to Renpy so bear with my silly question. I want to add another button called "Inventory" to the in-game menu. (The one that appears when you right-click in game.) It would be located above the "Save" button. After clicking it, it opens up a screen that behaves like the other opt...

Re: Free Character Sprites
So far, these are my top picks for my Dangan Ronpa parody practice game thing. I really like the colors and shading.

When the backstory is more interesting than the story.
Have you ever had this happen? You're writing a story, then you're writing the backstory for a character. Then you realize the backstory sounds cooler than the one you're writing. What did you do about it? In my current project, one of my character's backstory is basically this. She was a former "Po...

Re: Character Development Timing
You gave me a lot to consider. Thank you this is very helpful. For hidden depths, you need to show the surface first. Remember that it's not just the MC not knowing the character, but they don't know the MC, either. (Unless there's a childhood friend in there?) So, in the beginning, the characters d...

Re: Premonition, Critique Welcome
This sounds a lot like a world-famous movie franchise. That said, think about whether you'll benefit by changing your premise. I expected the Terminator comparisons. I wanted to explore themes of technology. Things like the growing dependency on technology and automated processes. Most of the robot...

Premonition, Critique Welcome
I've been hesitating to share my idea, I kept thinking that everyone would say it's stupid. But whatever. The setting of Premonition takes place in the not so distant future. A computer virus has taken over the world, the robot uprising has happened. Humanity is nearing extinction. The only hope lef...

Character Development Timing
One thing I love the most about fiction is character development. Seeing a character grow from point A to point B whether its simple or complex. It's one of the reasons I love video games specifically RPGs. There's one thing I'm struggling with and that's the timing. Basically my game is the standar...

Re: Time gaps: How does it affect the flow of a story?
I'm still thinking over this question myself, but here's what I think. The first chapter establishes the protagonist and the world they live in. You might show the protagonist's morning routine, but you'll probably not detail it everyday unless there's a good reason, like one day his morning routine...
