Re: Looking to start a Visual Novel department, where to begin...
Congrats on your funding! My first question would be what do you mean by "recruit"? 150k isn't a huge amount if you're looking to hire full time staff. (Although this is somewhat dependent upon *where* you want to hire the staff. But where I live, 150k would hire maybe 1 full time programmer for a y...

Re: Integration of Story and RPG-Like Gameplay
Would you find an utterly mediocre battle system in an otherwise mechanically otome-like game to be a point of interest that breaks up information-heavy areas, or an immersion-breaking, plot-blocking, pain? I think it depends on how mediocre the battle system is. If the battle sections are reasonab...

Re: Games You Want to Play
Most of the cast in Zero Escape games are adults, with fleshed out backstories, actual jobs and knowledge that contributes to solve the puzzles and problems they face. I'm definitely going to have to check them out then. :) That sounds really interesting. (And more fun than yet another teenager. No...

Re: Games You Want to Play
If you liked Squid Game there are quite a few "death game" VNs aside from Danganropa, though most generally still have characters in the teen to young adult range. I may check some of them out, thanks for the suggestions! (Although I really do want games with adult protagonists. As someone in her 4...

Games You Want to Play
I'm curious as to what games other people might want to play. e.g. what game, if you saw it advertised, would you purchase on the spot if someone was just awesome enough to create it? I'll throw out one... Danganropa ...but with adult characters. (Or I suppose Squid Game the Murder Mystery ) 16 (or ...

Re: Is my protagonist too good to be true?
It's not so much that I'm hoping to divine what actually motivated him, but rather find what motivation could have created the insightful and fastidious judge we see in the historical record. I inherently think this could be interesting (and I'm not sure he needs to be broken down or have a traumat...

Re: Is my protagonist too good to be true?
The lives the historical personages are compelling, but the judge in question lacks a fatal flaw and never seems to be pushed beyond his breaking point. He appears to have begun his career in public service already self-actualized, based on how eloquently he speaks of the law and how justly he rule...

Re: How (Not) To Make Money As a Solo Dev
My experience is also kinda skewed because my only Steam release so far is more or less a re-release of a previously available game. I'm kinda curious to see if a simultaneous itch/Steam release would synergize to boost traffic overall, or if Steam would just eat some of the itch.io sales. Based on...

Re: How (Not) To Make Money As a Solo Dev
Interesting... Yeah, I hadn't launched a game on Steam until recently, so I do think the advice is skewed toward smaller platforms like itch.io. Not sure why I waited so long to try Steam, but you really do notice the effects of the vastly larger userbase. Kinda sad, because I really like itch.io, ...

Re: How (Not) To Make Money As a Solo Dev
Thanks for sharing this! I'm interested to find out a bit more about your experience with press releases. When you say it didn't work, do you mean: 1) The media outlets did not respond, or 2) You earned some previews and articles, but they did not direct any significant traffic to your distribution...

Re: How (Not) To Make Money As a Solo Dev
I'd agree with your belief that press releases seem to have little impact. Unless they somehow interest a reviewer enough to review the game, I don't think they do much. I did have a fair amount of luck with sending Steam Keys out to reviewers. Not ALL reviewed the game, but at least *some* did, whi...

Re: What are some things you hate about romantic Visual Novels??
Related to #3, I really despise when it is impossible to not end up with someone. I.e. I want to be able to totally fail as the protagonist. If I am an unlikeable jerk who makes no effort, I hate being handed a 'consolation' romance (usually the childhood friend) as a default fallback. Ooof, yeah, ...

Re: What are some things you hate about romantic Visual Novels??
Most of this is because of simplicity. Authors probably dont want to create multiple characters to present for the mc and then write them off. Stories are usually what happened, not what might happen ie simulating real life. Giving presents, rescuing and girls being virgin are anime tropes, mc resc...

Re: What are some things you hate about romantic Visual Novels??
Yep, a lot of these tropes are pretty pervasive. (Which makes me think some people must LOVE them. But I clearly don't.)skybeargames wrote: ↑Tue Aug 31, 2021 1:27 amWow Mutive, I just went over your list a couple of times against examples and it fits so many other media toolike YA and romance in general

Re: What are some things you hate about romantic Visual Novels??
Oh boy...there are a number here that I despise: 1. The "destined" lovers. I get how infatuation can feel that way, but it's a problematic trope. 2. The "we show each other love by hating on each other". Teasing is fine, but when it gets to the point of negging, it's icky. And if it gets to the poin...
