Hah, for that I don't think you need a formal class. (Although classes do give discipline! But really, it's mostly the higher level stuff that seems to really require a bunch of formal training, which most game design really isn't! Not necessarily a lot but...even a little will give you a great idea as to what you can do in a visual novel that you *can't* even in a choose your own adventure novel. I definitely think it's possible to program without learning it in college. I mean, clearly you program and there are a lot of people earning good livings (who I know) who are self taught!
