Not all VNs are about romance. A lot of them are mystery/horror/etc. but a lot of them do have a romance theme even if it's a minor plot point as in i.e. RockRobin.

Pokemon, Yu-gi-oh, B-daman etc. were all on regular tv here and I've watched them since I was 3 or so but the first ever anime I saw knowing it was anime was Tokyo Mew Mew. Still have fond memories of that :')
