Thoughts on "Best" Screen Size

I'm targeting 1024x768 currently, but there was a recent article on Reddit and Hacker News implying that the "default" screen size now for PCs and Macs is bigger. In my case I'm thinking this will be easier to "crop down" if I build a mobile version.

What do you think?

Re: There's this voice acting forum

Keep in mind that voice adds a lot of megs to your final file size. If your target population is ok with DLing a 100-150 meg file then you should be fine. If not... you may want to see if you can get by with just music and sound effects. In terms of resources - in addition to the two sites above con...

Re: Ren'py Video, won't work? Please help!

I seem to recall the one game where I used video I went with MPEG-1 which was reasonably acceptable.

Does it have to be video? With some of the animation techniques you might be better off just letting RenPy animate your frames.

Re: Launcher Issue - Ren'Py 6.13.12.1728 Editors under Ubunt

In the category of "duh"... turns out that SciTE when it installs does not install the Linux Executable or the Scite shell script file with +x properties. Adding +x to each allows the launcher to launch them. Not sure whether it would be possible to set them up that way in the archive?

Launcher Issue - Ren'Py 6.13.12.1728 Editors under Ubuntu

Installed the Linux version of Ren'Py under my /home/ewang directory (so /home/ewang/renpy-6.13.12). System comes up fine and lets me setup a directory for a new game, etc. Also runs and shows me the default screen in the selected color and theme. When I go to "Edit Script" I get an "Error - Launchi...

Re: Why do characters in visual novels rarely change clothes

All those points about adding voices are true, but "for me" the size issue is what has kept me from doing it again. Though as time goes on it seems an 80 Meg archive is not as horrible as it used to be :D

Re: Free background pictures for visual novel?

If you use Windows, you can always download Paint.Net, pull in a photograph you've taken, and then apply some of the artistic filters to get something that looks like it has been drawn or painted. Better, start with that, and then touch it up to make it look more like a background and less like a fi...

Re: Why do characters in visual novels rarely change clothes

Not just art that's a problem, but it can also introduce programming complexity. If I'm starting down one path, and I make a choice that takes me down another, I have to make sure that I either do or don't change clothes accordingly. Also if I have a uniform and a casual outfit (two characters from ...

Anyone looking to use the new english version of ComiPo?

If I'm reading the license correctly, as long as you don't claim copyright on their characters, you're free to use them commercially and otherwise: http://www.comipo.com/en/ Needless to say, I'm tempted to do more than just use the Trial Edition. It appears to be the kind of character art studio I'v...

Hello, Ewan! Congrats on the release...(I know I'm a bit too late but it's never too late to congratulate someone :)) I downloaded the game but for some reason it wouldn't open... I'm not sure why it wouldn't open, but I'll download it again anyway. Hope it works this time! Will post my opinion as ...

Re: Senior Year

The backgrounds used in this game were nice. What is the official website from where I can download these backgrounds? I am pretty sure I give the link in the credits page of the game. I don't have a Windows machine handy so I can't pull it up myself (generally do most of my work on an Android tabl...

If you actually wanted to use transparency, though, there's always the comedy option of her wearing her brand new robes, getting caught in the rain, and then discovering to her surprise that they turn see-through. Then you get the peekaboo aspect as well as making her blush like crazy! But, er, tha...

Re: Ren'Py for Android: Launcher Test

Noticing the last post on this is in February, and that we're now in May, has there been any updates to the Android port? I've been playing with PhoneGap Build as well as Kwiksher, and did enough with Adobe AIR to understand why hardly anyone is releasing with that, but it would obviously be great t...

Re: Performance on Android

These should all be supported, although it may be necessary to increase the size of a bar so it's easier to touch with your finger. ^THIS!!! SO many ports of games for Android and even iOS seem to forget that fingers aren't styluses. While on the iPad (I only have the original since I went Android ...
