Re: Is a visual novel a "game"? Grad student needs your opin
Anything with interactive elements, such as a visual novel, might be considered a game assuming there are multiple outcomes (including a death or failure type ending) that can be obtained through interaction. If all you're doing is reading then it's just a novel. I find that some times people use th...

Re: Psychotic Characterization
Psychopathy (/saɪˈkɒpəθi/) (or sociopathy (/ˈsoʊsiəˌpæθi/)) is a personality trait or disorder characterised partly by enduring anti-social behavior, a diminished capacity for empathy or remorse, and poor behavioral controls.[1] The 4th and 5th editions of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of M...

Re: Good Endings, Bad Endings, True Endings, False Endings
I ran across this thread while searching for thoughts about branching storylines and opinions on how many paths people prefer and I felt the need to add my two cent so forgive me if I ramble a bit. It seems like when dealing with multiple endings the only "true ending" should be the one that the pla...

Re: Character Art Style Feedback
People's opinion of art is subjective, What looks great to one person can be horrible to another. I think what matters though is if the art style fits the product you're making and that it's consistent. To me these characters come across as cute, fun caricatures, not very serious , but they are cons...

Re: Resizing a sprite?
Whatever art you do for your sprites make sure you start as large as you can rather than starting small and trying to make it bigger, because enlarging it can lead to artifacts and blurriness.

Re: Advice on Plot Layout
@ PN04 Perhaps 'formulaic' was not the best description. It does carry a lot of negative connotation. Maybe I should have said that each path is fairly 'set' meaning you can't switch between obtainables after a certain point? Yeah, "set paths" is better wording. I think it lets people know what the...

Re: First Steps in Commercial Games
Merchandise is probably your next best bet, if your characters are interesting or marketable enough you might be able to get away with shirts, trinkets or other items related to them. There's that new thing going around called Patreon, where you can ask people if they like your work to donate every t...

Re: Advice on Plot Layout
It sounds okay to me.
I think my only problem with it is describing it as formulaic, which it might be but I guess the word has bad connotations to me and I'm just trying to think outside the box too much.

Re: What's you opinion on screen resolution?
I've seen a lot of people suggest that 1080p is pointless on a 17 inch laptop monitor (or anything below 30 inches) so unless you expect someone to output to a big screen or they just have a desk top with a giant monitor then getting in the 1280x800 or 1024x786 area might be just on the verge of ove...

Re: Could an English VN do well in Japan?
Word of mouth, ad banners, posting on VN-related forums, posting on indie game forums, getting reviews on indie game sites, striking distribution deals with people who have more advertising budgets (getting Cute Knight onto some casual games portals way back when was very helpful, although I no lon...

Re: Could an English VN do well in Japan?
Not 'only concerns English sales' - 'only concerns English sales on DLsite '. Sales of English games in places that are actually focused on selling English games are TOTALLY different. Apples to redwoods. I haven't done anything to advertise on DLsite because that's not where my customer base is. W...

Re: Could an English VN do well in Japan?
Yes, pirates and super-hardcore japanese fans (who hate anything western-made and call it weeaboo) know that dlsite exists. They're the "hardly anybody". It still is not comparable to how things actually sell on a site targeted to and advertising to paying western customers. Remember, I sell games ...

Re: Could an English VN do well in Japan?
Japanese products are pirated widely too. If you're comparing sales figures on eng.dlsite with figures on maniax, there's the small issue that hardly anybody knows eng.dlsite EXISTS. (Or cares, since most of what's on sale there isn't in English.) In terms of mass market penetration, I agree Englis...
