Re: Assistance Requested on a University Project
I guess that begs the question "what makes someone a 'subject'?" If you were publishing your findings in a journalistic setting rather than an academic one, the ethical requirements would be completely different despite your actions being identical in each case. Furthermore, the goal of the intervie...

Re: ANN Answerman 2011-04-1
I guess it comes down to the difference between people who want to have fun and foster a community and those who want to go pro. I can see people who [think they] make professional-grade games wanting to silence the hobby designer/developers so as not to be compared to what they might call "trash" i...

Re: Cursor Ideas
The catch is balancing contrast with obnoxiousness. Using a brightly colored cursor in a dark (visually) game is a bad idea, as is using a dark cursor in a bright game. On the other hand, while you may not want your audience looking at the cursor when they should be looking at art and reading text, ...

Re: Assistance Requested on a University Project
Do you need IRB approval before you TALK to people? In my line of research, pre-experimental approval (usually IACUC) is for more serious matters, like taking the brains out of animals and stuff like that. I can even understand needing approval for something like psychology research which might (in ...

Re: Vote your favourite RPG battle system!
Tactical RPGs are for people who like gameplay. That's all there is to it. Do you think your game will appeal to people who like gameplay? Will people who like gameplay even know about your game? I love tactical RPGs, and I love VNs. But the games which mix them together end up having their story mo...

Re: Converting VN's to Ren'py (For Android?)
First off, I guess you're extracting the images as 32-bit BMP. Convert those to whatever image format Ren'Py likes... I would think *.png for alpha-enabled channels. I have lots of experience with Crage (and, indeed, with hacking VNs in general) since I headed the "G-Senjou no Maou" translation. Cra...

Re: Your ~Favorite~ cliches and tropes
First off, I didn't diss "Twilight". I made it clear that my only opinion is that I liked the movie's lighting. Secondly, I'm not saying that the danger to the characters makes it an unworthy plot, I just feel like an author should be prepared for readers to question the reliability of his or her na...

Re: Any other good methods to reduce file size?
I wish vector formats for graphics were more common. They are always smaller than raster graphics, even when very complex. Especially when used for animation. Do you really think games would be able to real-time render complex art and/or animations? Spline calculations take forever for long strings...

Re: Your ~Favorite~ cliches and tropes
I don't do sociopaths and/or fantasy creatures in romantic situations. If you stop to think about it, it's just ridiculous. This is exactly the reason people who hate "Twilight" hate "Twilight" (my only opinion on it is that the movie had alright lighting). Someone who is in love with someone else w...

Church Militant Oh yeah, that's a good one. That's the main appeal of the entire Castlevania series of games, being a holy warrior aka paladin. The most recent game in the series, Lords of Shadow, really made you feel like you were fighting for God by pitting you against Satan in the final battle a...

Modern tsundere can't control their emotions and flop back and forth between being pissy and sweet. But not just pissy in a typical person with an attitude way... more like a downright ass. And yet people still love them for some reason. I'd rather have a yandere personally, at least everyone realiz...
