Barring last minute suggestions, I have only one more feature to be added to Ren'Py 4.2. Parameterized Images The idea here is that we will allow images to optionally take parameters, that can control what is displayed. The upshot of this is that we will allow a user to write something like: show te...

Very good! So basically sounds could be played even while wave-based (mp3, ogg) music is running, yes? Yes. There's a limit to the number of sounds that can be played at once, but it's large (around 8 or so). Small proposal: Could you please add a version date to the tutorial to make it easier to s...

I've implemented all of the features mentioned above, and then some. The impatient can check out the new version of the development documentation, at:

http://www.bishoujo.us/renpy/devel/doc/tutorial.html

I'm now expecting to cut 4.2 reasonably soon, perhaps on Saturday.

Another feature for 4.2: Sounds as different from music, we will support sounds that can be used as sound effects and things like that. These sounds will be suitable for sound effects, but not really for voice. If someone is actually serious about making a fully voiced game, we can talk about how th...

There is already a config variable that limits how far the user can rollback. (Sorta... for various reasons, it's only a suggestion.) I could make this a harder limit if you want, so the user can only rollback, say, 10 checkpoints. This is probably a decent compromise that lets the user fix mistakes...

Okay, how's this for a final triage: Time-based elements. I'll definitely add in a second parameter to pause, which synchronizes it with the music. Performance-optimized animation. The thing about this is that the big performance hit is the number of pixels we push to the screen. Since we redraw the...

Hm... Let me see about this: Time-based elements . We already have the ability to write: $ renpy.pause(2) which pauses for 2 seconds. I guess I could add to that a second parameter which, if given, gives the time in the music to pause to, if music is playing. You'd also have to give a delay time to ...

Ren'Py 4.2 New/Suggested Features

I figure I'll one day be releasing a Ren'Py 4.2, so I've decided to open a thread for new features. Feel free to post here with new features you would suggest for a new version. Things that will definitely be in the new release: Bug fixes. Right now, this includes the version number in the demo game...

I'm a stupid idiot. I typed "rd" instead of "rb" as a file mode in the archiver.py script, leading to the obvious errors when running on Windows. I've uploaded a fixed version of archiver.exe to bishoujo.us. You can get it by going to http://www.bishoujo.us/tmp/archiver.exe Just drop it in on top of...

Did you add:

Code: Select all

init:
    config.archives = [ 'images' ]
To your game script?

Only if someone asks really really nicely. And even then I'll probably make them have to set a variable like: init: $ config.enable_that_damn_text_typing_thing = True Although there probably will be some mention of cps in there. And I'll definitely add in a preference that lets people turn it off.

I agree that transition effects can be abused, but I figure it's not my purpose to come up with a tool, not to protect people from themselves. I think it's appropriate to use transitions between scenes, and when a character enters or leaves a scene. Default transitions are probably a bad idea for an...

How long does it usually take you to make a character? I'm still fairly new to drawing at all. The only reason I use vector graphics is because I can't draw a straight line or a curve to save my life. Doing that "drawing" took me about a day, although quite a bit of that time was tweaking body shap...

I like your Misato. Is she inked with actual ink, or on the computer? Yes, the character I posted is one intended for my game. She also shows some stylistic changes, that I think will persist in the game art. Lighter shading (25% versus 33%) and different eyes being foremost among them. She was draw...
