The underscore is used to call a name that's in the library. This way, I can change the library, and people can't complain too loudly, since if you're using a name with an _ in front of it, you have lost your right to complain. Ren'Py can do alot more than the demo shows, or even then the tutorial d...

Two more new features: Persistent data. This is data that persists from game to game. This would be useful if, for example, there's a special ending that only unlocks if the user gets all of the normal endings. Preferences screen. Expose the preferences as buttons on a screen inside the game menu, r...

Ren'Py 4.1 Suggested Features

This topic is here to let me post things that I think will be in Ren'Py 4.1. Feel free to post things that you think should be there, but if it will be actually implemented will be up to me, and especially how hard I think it will be to implement the features in question. Almost certain to be in 4.1...

I hate windows.

Hm... I may have been mistaken. It may be that XP requires 48x48 icons, rather than 64x64. If someone who actually uses windows could clear this up, I'd appreciate it. I just use windows to play games, and to build and test Ren'Py. Most Ren'Py game development actually takes place on Linux, but Pyth...

I think that the eventual plan will be to simply make a variable that takes tuples of button names and target labels, and executes things by jumping to the appropriate target label. So one could have something on the order of: init: library.main_menu = [ ( 'Start Game', 'start' ), ( 'Continue Game',...

I was just about to post on this, but you beat me to it. (Literally.) Right now, I have to rebuild the exe file to change the icon. It's not really a user-servicable part, unless you want to try building the exe yourself. (Which requires python 2.3, pygame, and py2exe installed.) If you want me to r...

To some extent, I can't help it. I'll stop coding when they pry my cold dead hands off the keyboard. There are also some things that can't really be expressed well through spoken dialogue. (Like how to call the archive command.) There's also the fact that the new demo took me about a day to make (no...

First of all, let me point out I split this into its own topic so that more people can see the answer. Okay, more detailed instruction on how to obfuscate/archive images. 1) Run a command line. 2) Change into the directory containing your game. (If you haven't changed anything, this will be somehing...

Ren'Py 4.0 Released!

Well, I'm pleased to announce the release of Ren'Py 4.0. This is the first real release of the new codebase, and contains a signficant number of new features relative to the preview release. Notable among them are loading and saving, transition s, predictive loading, styles, and music support. You c...

I'll hold you to that PyTom! But in exchange for getting the first look, I expect an entensive critique. ;D You're on. :) There are a couple ways we could do a concept art gallery. The easiest is to simply make it into the equivalent of a second game script, showing the images and advancing when th...

Omake Section

Going on the assumption that it is an omake section, I think that that's on the list of things that I'll add when someone who's actually making a game with Ren'Py requests it (and is done enough with the game that I can see that they're serious.) It's not hard, but at the same time I'm not sure that...

Going back through Ren'Py posts, I realized there was one feature that I forgot. I just added the ability to prompt the user for their name (or for any other text).

So, I just added the renpy.input function, to rectify this.

New Features Update --- 2004-09-05

Well, unless I've forgotten something really important, Ren'Py 4.0 is now feature complete, with implementation for all the features I wanted to have in this release. If someone notices I forgot something post, email, or IM me. I'll next work on a new demo game, in preparation for a release in a day...

Your doing great Pytom, there should be a ren'ai engine contest and you would get first Well, I did this for myself, to make writing a game easier by making the script and the game code the same thing. But if other people use it to make new games, well, that's a fringe benefit. I don't know what Fi...
