Re: My very own noobie questions

You're allowed to make as many or as few save slots as you want, but this bothers me a bit. You're basically saying you're going to write five different books, but I'm only allowed to read one. What if the brother who shares my computer would prefer to read a different book? What if I LIKE your boo...

This doesn't set a variable. It checks if the variable has been set, and discards the result. Use this instead:

Code: Select all

    $mp.lights=True

Re: multipersistent data

Not just easy, but absolutely trivial.
Step 1: User finishes game 1. (No need to save. Multi-persistent data is automatically saved.)
Step 2: User starts game 2. (Multi-persistent data automatically carries over.)

Re: Crash Reporting System

$20/mo? No thanks, I'll write my own if I need it. (I think you are seriously overestimating how poorly small indie games sell. For every success, there are several games that fail to sell even ten copies per month, especially toward the end of their life. Business is harsh, and newcomers always und...

Re: Help! Teens Are Using Digital Drugs to Get High

Gotta love the "something that satisfies some need is a gateway to everything else that satisfies the same need" logic. Violent games are a gateway to real violence! Healthy food is a gateway to junk food! Reading is a gateway to watching television all day! Contact lenses are gateway to laser eye s...

Re: Newbie question: Art or writing? Which is more important

As a gamer who also plays visual novels, I'm going to have to disagree heartily. The existence of a gamer who also plays visual novels does nothing to disprove my statement that they are different markets. I am also a gamer who plays visual novels. I also occasionally listen to both pop music and n...

Re: Newbie question: Art or writing? Which is more important

A successful game to me is one that you can expect your average gamer to have heard of (and actually managed a decent profit). Gamers do not play visual novels. It's a completely different market. It's bizarre to even compare them. Asking the average gamer to recognize a visual novel is like asking...

Re: What do you like in a VN?

Do you like to have ... A)Different styles of a main protagonist(like shy, loli, courageous, etc.) and also able to give a name to the main protagonist you choose. B)Customizable main protagonist(able to give a name and change the appearance of the main protagonist but not the personality) C)A basic m...

Re: Danger ahead.

If you, as a single individual, try to say anything to your government, you will be ignored. If you get a few million people to write in that they are opposed to ACTA, then your government can't afford to ignore you, even if they think you are all crackpots. The goal is to make a lot of noise, not t...

Re: Newbie question: Art or writing? Which is more important

The reader is going to spend much more time reading than they are going to spend looking at the art, so the writing is much more important. Just look at ひぐらしのなく頃に (Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, "When They Cry" in English): one of the most popular visual novels ever, but horribly primitive art.

Re: object making

Generally speaking, I'd totally agree it's a bad design most of the time, but lots of generic data structures use this approach - tree nodes have tree nodes inside them, etc.; it's not always bad. In a tree, you are placing a class instance (or technically a reference to a class instance) in anothe...

Re: which background looks better?

Both have problems, but the problems in the first one bother me more. Reducing color depth like that is a horrible way to simulate cell shading. I think using the photo unfiltered is probably better than either of these.

Re: object making

There is no good reason for placing a class instance in the class itself, but it can be done and my example code shows you how to do it. Replacing the ????? with actual names, it looks like this: class SomeClassName(object): pass # Place other class contents here. SomeClassName.object = SomeClassNam...

Re: Otome-related survey

Another male perspective. (I really liked re:Alistair, so I guess that makes me a fan of at least some otome games.) 1. If you had a definite female protagonist (with her own not-customizable sprite and a personality) would you like her to: a) Have her own name. I have a hard enough time finding nam...

Re: Ren'Py 6.11.0 Pre-Released

Stretching fails to preserve the aspect ratio. If I make the window really wide, the image is stretched in the vertical dimension. If I make the window really tall, the image is also stretched in the the vertical dimension, but not by as much. It fails to start at all on my G4 Mac Mini. No traceback...
