Re: Telltale Games (The Walking Dead, The Wolf Among Us, etc
People have a hard time defining visual novels because it was always "that strange bunch of games from Japan which don't fit into any Western category." However the confusion doesn't end there because there is no actual visual novel genre in Japan, they go by bishoujo or whatever else. The...

Re: Is it possible to have too much choices?
I'm in the middle of writing a script and I want my game to engage the player. So much so, they'll want to replay it to explore all the possible routes. So I wanted to implement alot of player choices. But can choices become a nuisance? Can a game have too much choices? In a perfect world there is ...

Re: Is Moenovel planning an original title for the West?
Heh, the last time a Japanese company created a game for the Western audience we got "Go! Go! Nippon!" For those unfamiliar with the title, it's a VN whose sole purpose is to help tourists when they decide to visit Japan. Also Moenovel SAY they are targeting western audiences, but the tran...

Re: Converting a Novella to a Visual Novel (Thoughts?)
If it's a kinetic novel, what's stopping you using 3rd person past tense? You can very easily use 3rd person past tense for kinetic novels, it's visual novels where things become a bit difficult. That being said, Loren was done in the 3rd person past as well and that was a visual novel(/RPG hybrid.)...

Re: Guardian Enmity (Light Sci-Fi/Drama/Action) +(Romance)*
It looks REALLY good, but the writing needs a bit of a pass-over: 1st line - I checked the front desk, but was told no one came in. But is a contradictory statement, used to introduce a phrase which contradicts the previous. So maybe “but” isn’t really suited here. I can't tell, context is needed bu...

Re: Dialogues in VN
Indeed, some things might be less bloated because we know each other well and have a history with each other, so we can cut out extraneous words. That's an interesting point I'd like to expand on. There was a study conducted (I'd like to say in the "in the US", but I'll settle for "s...

Re: Dialogues in VN
Yeah, the OP's nailed a critical point. Real dialogue is full of bloat and pointless meanderings, whereas scenes have purpose and direction. Real dialogue have terrible words stuck in for no reason "Like" "I mean" "yeah" "I know" "soooooo" "um&q...

Re: A less boring Dating Sim Formula?
I’m playing around with using a Skyrim like system of stat-raising for a future sim (not a dating sim, but close enough right?) Basically how you decide to go about things determines intuitively the growth of your character, so if you decide to defuse a situation using words, that will increase your...

Yep, guilty as charged. Sex sells.SundownKid wrote: However even if you do think the EVN's on steam are just selling due to the sex material
Mostly translated VNs, or VNs with a famous writer (like World End Economica.)SundownKid wrote: there were plenty of Kickstarter successes with Sekai Project for longer games.

Re: The Otome Market VS Romance Visual Novels for Guys
Both have their advantages. There are far more Otome EVNs so you would be guaranteed a large market if you made one (but also a lot of competition). In contrast, there is a shorter supply of Bishoujo EVNs and thus there will be a larger demand for one. If you make a Bishoujo EVN your game will be i...

Re: Sword Daughter [GxB] [Fantasy] [Commercial]
A short comment on this VN's length. The book format is not an ideal one when it comes to branching storylines - its limits on size (books were fairly small back in the 80s) combined with the author’s habit of including plenty of choices meant gamebooks offered a fairly short reading experience. I w...

Re: Choices of no return?
I'm thinking of having elements that are out of the player's control being randomly chosen at the beginning of the game without the player knowing until far later on. Then when the player replays the game after beating it, they will get a different randomized choice. Once the player's played throug...

Genre 1 - Comedy of manners

I'm tempted to make this request almost impossible by listing the third as "magical girl" and maybe a 4th as "hard science fiction" but that's being cruel.
