Re: Free Sprites [CC by NC 3.0]
I'm thinking of branching out and making more varieties of sprites. Any requests/suggestions? Personally, I'd love to see some older-looking characters, since those are a lot less common in free sprites than students in school uniforms. But I'll also probably be happy with whatever you come up with...

Re: Let's talk about the amount of character sprites on a screen
I don't think 4 sprites would be too many, especially if it's not for very long. But whether it comes across looking crowded could also depend a lot on the dimensions of the sprites as well as how much other stuff there is going on visually at the same time, like if there's also a complicated backgr...

Re: Pacing and Editing - Advice Wanted
I'm feeling a bit more confident now knowing what I did right and wrong, but it is still hard to edit things when scenes have to be changed or discarded when I was previously fond of them! If you weren't doing this already, I suggest keeping your old draft that had those scenes you liked in it save...

Re: Pacing and Editing - Advice Wanted
When initially writing I think the feeling I had was not wanting to spend too long on parts that players will potentially be replaying 4 times to see all 4 main routes . . . I personally wouldn't worry about this at all. It almost never bothers me to just hit skip and zoom through the common route ...

Re: Good Writing Software?
I personally just use google docs, with a lot of bookmarks, links, spreading things out across multiple documents, and leaving myself a lot of notes. But you might also try using twine , which I've had some fun with in the past. It's actually an engine for text-based interactive fiction, and it's pr...

Re: Mystery getting stale or repetitive.
I think Mutive's advice sounds good, but also, I don't think repetition in itself is necessarily a bad thing. For instance, the Danganronpa games follow a format that's a little bit like what you're describing: in every chapter, the characters just hang out for a bit, then there's an inevitable murd...

Re: When it comes to trying to make the MC neutral.
In my opinion if you're going to make an MC for the player to "project" onto, you need to go all in. I think this comment is really well put and I totally agree. I think that if you want players to be able to roleplay as the protagonist and really immerse themselves as if they're the hero...

Re: Tricks/effects to make the game more alive/interactive
It is a very good point. If you see something too often it is distracting and even annoying. I feel the same. I wonder, how often is not too often? What do you think? Well, in my opinion, controlling the text speed should only be used for a special effect. Like a pause before a revelation, for exem...

Re: Tricks/effects to make the game more alive/interactive
I'm personally not a fan of too many animated text effects, except for occasional emphasis. I read pretty quickly, so animations or frequent pauses that control the speed of the text tend to slow me down and annoy me. One thing I do like sometimes is if there's a short pause at the end of the line -...

Re: Do you think there is a market for non-anime visual novels?
There are plenty of visual novels that aren't especially anime-influenced, either in tone or visual style. And while you're right that a lot of what we associate with the visual novel genre comes out of Japan, I'm not sure I would agree that that makes all VNs somewhat influenced by anime either. A ...

Quick update to say that I've spruced up the steam version of the game ! It now has achievements! And the demo that was only available on itch.io before is now on the steam page as well, so if that's the platform you prefer, you can check out a little preview before buying it. It also has a 25% disc...

Re: Create a mini game
You're kind of asking about a bunch of different mechanics in one question, so if you want people to be able to help you, you might have to be more specific and break things down into smaller pieces. For instance, what do you mean by "break objects in a box" - are these just images you cli...

Re: Game Direction
So do you think if I made it less visual novel focused and more I guess rpg style and interactive, it could draw people in? That way it's not completely static and in a way you're also looking at the side stories in turn sort of like octopath traveler in a sense? I'm just trying to think execution ...
