Thank you kindly for the answers, worked perfectly!
Just in case someone has the exact same problem I had, as my status was an integer, I had to make it a string first to get it work with the first solution:
show expression "status"+str(status)+".png"

[SOLVED] Is it possible to use variables in Ren'Py statements?
This is probably a very daft question, but I couldn't find an answer anywhere. Is it possible to use a variable as part of Ren'Py statements, and if yes, how? For example, say that I have five status images (status1.png ... status5.png), and at times during the game I wish to show one that matches t...

Re: How to keep artists committed?
Two more personalized replies still: It's a bit too late now, but for future, and for others, I have an idea. Try to ask artist to draw batch in stages. For example - sketches of all characters first, so you can check if they're similar in style. Then, lineart of all characters. This will also help ...

Re: How to keep artists committed?
Is it not possible to get a different artist to complete the job in a sufficiently similar style? This is definitely a possibility, I'm currently trying to do this before ordering a third set, but so far no luck. Most artists don't seem to be interested in and/or comfortable trying to duplicate som...

Re: How to keep artists committed?
Many more good points in the new messages, thank you. Regarding payment method and recourse: as stated before, I pay each sprite separately, in two parts, first half for the sketch, and then second half for the finished version. This works very well for individual sprites. but the problem is artists...

Re: How to keep artists committed?
If you don't mind me asking, what do you think is affordable? Prices I can afford. I have a budget, which is the amount of money I have saved over years to make my game reality. That money has to cover everything. There is no way to magically make that pile larger. I ask what the artists want for t...

Re: How to keep artists committed?
In the long run it's cheaper to hire someone dependable than someone who'll disappear in the middle of the project. But I do understand - custom art can be expensive for games with a small budget. Maybe you could cut the number of sprites and backgrounds needed so you can hire a more experienced ar...

Re: How to keep artists committed?
Thank you for the replies, several excellent insights. It was also comforting to hear I'm not the only one who's faced this kind of problem, unfortunate as it is. I realize the basic problem is that I can't afford to hire true professionals with extensive portfolios and great reputation. They are si...

Re: Backgrounds made with sketchup - commercial use?
Not sure if I misunderstood something, but if you wish to use any content created with SketchUp in a commercial application (including a commercial game), you need to purchase the Pro version to do this legally.

How to keep artists committed?
My project is currently in crisis due to problems with character sprite artists. The first character artist I hired took several long hiatuses and finally quit when three main characters were still missing, citing a family emergency. The second character artist delivered first two sprites in a very ...

Re: Could this kind of project work as a VN?
On the contrary, the Ren'Py engine is perfectly capable of presenting a 100% animated visual novel in the style of a tell tale games work. The additional work to implement that won't come from Ren'Py but from a 3rd party animation software which you would require even if you chose a different engin...

Re: Could this kind of project work as a VN?
I think you are looking at it wrong. Ren'Py is just an engine. It can be used for adventure-type games, mystery games, RPGs, choice-driven narratives, etc. Sure, if you call your project a 'Visual Novel', that is going to carry a certain baggage of expectations with it, but you don't have to do tha...

Re: Could this kind of project work as a VN?
Thank you kindly for the insights, much appreciated! You can have a realistic setting and heavily developed realistic characters and still keep it in typical anime style, there is no contradiction. It depends on the author. You can take a look at 'Root Double' VN, it's kind of sci-fi with a bit dark...

Could this kind of project work as a VN?
I couldn't figure out where I could ask about this, hopefully this is the right place. Basically, I'm pondering whether my game concept would work as a Visual Novel / appeal to VN audience. I know the story I want to tell, I have the music I need, I can draw & render some of the graphics I need ...
