Re: Freelancing question (being paid for concepts)
On top of LateWhiteRabbit and somni's excellent advice, I'd like to add that you can ask the client for a design document/references. In this case, it'll be concepts or images of characters that resonate with him, whether it's a character design or a character trait. If you're starting completely fr...

Re: Is it hard to distinguish if a character is a male or female in my art style? + Tips
Hmmm.... I have a different opinion than mitoky, that the male sprite can be read as female. However, it stems more form the fact that both faces and eyes have a similar shape and that both expressions are pretty neutral. There are other ways to subtly push people to see a character to be more mascu...

Re: How do you design a good UI with fitting motifs?
What do you characters/backgrounds look like? If the palette is too light/too dark compared to your chosen palette, the UI may look jarring against the rest of the game. I don't know how much I can help you since you have such limited graphic design experience, so I'll share some tips that might hel...

SUPER LONG POST GOOOOOOOO Pro Versions (USB vs USB-C) The Pro only requires two cables compared to the non-Pro's three, but only if you have USB-C ports. If you're working with USB, you'll need their three-in-one cable (included in package) which just feels like three cables IMO. I worked with this ...

Re: Noir Art Tutorials?
Here's a Google search result you can use as a starting point. Most of them are catered towards actual lighting for life-action, but the introduction to the style should give you a good idea of what makes a noir scene. If you're looking for examples to help with hand-drawn work, check out this site...

Re: Safely send out demos
I thought a demo was just a small portion of a game that's distributed for marketing purposes? Are you giving out beta versions of the full game? Since this forum is catered towards creating a game, I would be shocked if someone was here to steal people's projects. This forum is full of people who w...

Re: Background Sizes
As mentioned by Sarchalen, it's always better to have a large source image you can downsize. I usually work 2x-4x the size of the in-game asset for everything, just in case the size needs to be tweaked later. Also, I'm curious about the aspect ratio you've chosen. 9:5 is a non-standard aspect ratio ...

Re: What Size Canvas for Drawing Sprites?
If you go into Photoshop > File > Save for Web, it'll pop up a window that will let you preview a copy of your image. It should look like this: Screenshot 2019-02-01 18.23.13.png The area I highlighted is where you can adjust how the image is downsampled. What you see in the image area should be exa...

College Life Pack: 3 Characters + 2 BGs
Hey all, wanted to share some assets I made for the visual novel Breakdown . There are two female characters, one male and two backgrounds (hallway and dorm). These assets are for non-commercial use only. Eye and mouth assets are images that can be overlaid on the base sprite to create expressions. ...

Re: Funding for paid game
Usually something like Kickstarter offers a download of the game at different tiers. Smaller amounts of money usually nets people things like a shoutout or digital wallpapers.
So in a sense, yes. But there's always an option to donate more money to receive a copy of the game when it is released.
