Re: Unique VN art?

@ Mammon, gotta admit you're right what I presented was more about the dynamic camera angles and what not ^.^;.... Oops. Don't worry, that wasn't critism or correcting you, rather than adding to the debate. WotHL is a good example that working well with what you have can be as good or bet...

Re: Some thoughts on repetitive/dragging prose

That's a thin line to walk, making hints just clear enough to be remembered without being a dead giveaway. You could do thinks such as adding a {a}link{/a} within the game that can literally act as a reminder/easy mode for those who forgot.(Can someone help with what that {a} is called again? I forg...

Re: Writing woes: Self-pity and lack of motivation

Well, I'm afraid that if you have depression the following might not work, especially with writing it's tough. It requires pure motivation to start writing and overcome writer's block, it's hard to judge and consider your work as any good, and will probably require at least one tireless friend to ac...

Re: Unique VN art?

About Witch on the holy night, that doesn't really seem like unique VN art. In fact the sprites themselves seem rather stereotypical for those Japanese VN. Skipping through the video I did see a lot of dynamic movements and placement, not to mention more setpieces and backgrounds, making the otherwi...

Re: Considerations to take when creating main characters.

You should never say 'I'll make a list of characters to romance to make sure it's well rounded.', because that will backfire. You might as well google a list of the most common tropes and then try this system on them. The result will be the same: in the end there will be one or two better characters...

Re: What is the Most important Skill as a VN Team Lead

Talent, understanding, structure, productivity. Not in that order, or any order. It's a constant rinse and repeat in an ever changing order and amount that usually comes in several cycles per product and none of these four parts is more or less important than any of the others. Rather they'll all pl...

Re: Question regarding offering preferred pronouns option for main player character

Ah, the question whether anyone plays them/they isn't really a question that would fit here indeed, but more because this is a forum where questions like these are also meant to be build upon and taken to new places by the responses. Not against you or that this is a wrong thread, but when it went t...

Re: Question regarding offering preferred pronouns option for main player character

I don't disagree with the concerns raised, I just don't think *I* succeeded in getting to the core of my question, and may possibly have misrepresented aspects of it. To clarify, I'm not feeling hamstrung in trying to hit an inoffensive, all-appealing baseline: They/Them is used naturally in speech...

Re: Question regarding offering preferred pronouns option for main player character

I agree with the previous posts, you cannot please everyone, the 'they' communities are small and their addition would only make the story less immersive for our much more broad he/she audience, and people from 1968 (and a lot of people from rural areas today) care not about gender identity so you a...

Re: Games you learned to code from or would recommend learning from

Though the main reason I don't look is because other people's code that's being put into actual use tends to look long and incomprehensible to me. That's not really a problem if you know where to look. If it's an effect or something that happens somewhere specific in the story, you can Ctrl+F for t...

Re: Games you learned to code from or would recommend learning from

I've learned from exactly 0 game's codes. I also consider the documentation for Ren'Py almost useless when it comes to learning to code. Just doesn't work for me. I'm the exact opposite of this. Either I see someone spell it out for me, or I don't know it at all. And I mean it needs to be spelled o...

Re: How did you learn to draw?

I loved drawing as a kid, and had great focus and patience for it. Back at that age (6 years old or so), just spending more than 15 minutes on a drawing already made you excel, so imagine how relatively good I was spending hours half copy-ing animals onto paper (6-year old me didn't understand the c...

Re: Your favourite artstyle for visual novel or overall

I care not about the style but whether this style fits and looks good. I can easily like a style in one game but don't when used in another game because it doesn't fit in the setting or genre. What works in a slice of life shouldn't be used in a gritty fantasy, f.e. But the genre doesn't immediately...

Re: What features do you like to see in a VN?

An answer I think will and should answer all of your questions: What do you think will work best here? The author, at this level of indie games, should never bend over and change their game for what they think the players will want. Of course, if their story is too out there or uninteresting no one ...

Re: Character Design for anecdotic character

I don't know if you planned this in advance and if it will work, but I can see this work if you would implement it with more side-characters. The main characters are simple and the side characters a lot better, and that's the joke. The protagonist is intentionally bland and undetailed to self-insert...
