Re: Just how awful is it to use stylized photos for bgs?

Those are heavily edited to the point they look like actual art, so I don't see the problem with using them. It's the ones that someone throws a Photoshop sketch filter and calls it a day, that are unsuitable for most serious works.

Re: Programs to make BGs and GUI

What I'd recommend for GUI making is Photoshop - you can download Photoshop CS2 free from Adobe, they are basically giving it away as abandonware. It's a little more dated than modern Photoshop but it's still better than GIMP IMO. I guess if you can get used to GIMP's UI you can use that instead.

Re: Character designs thoughts?

It seems pretty competent to me. The whole scar over one eye thing is the only thing that stands out to me as a somewhat cliched character design trait. Watch out with the name, you will get a lot of people confusing your game for Shadow Hearts, a well known series of RPGs if you were a gamer back i...

Re: Is my character art good enough? (please critique)

I don't want to pop your bubble, because your art is competent (and better than mine), but it's still not quite good enough for a commercial game. You are at the cusp of it being good enough but still need to work on certain aspects. The hands need improvement (fingers are kinda like sticks... no be...

Re: Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor [Reverse-Engineered]

Actually, I am a fan of the game myself, and I have played around with adding the time-based event system of Devil Survivor to a future game, because I like the way it works and makes the game feel less linear. I was able to pretty much get it working, albeit with my own design and not trying to cop...

Re: What kind of Personalities for a MC?

Personalities I like: Take-charge, kind, or if they are evil, either has a heart of gold, or they are charismatic about it. Personalities I dislike: Shy, cowardly, dumb, self-centered, or inconsiderate to others. Of course, I WHOLLY understand if a protagonist starts out with one of those "disl...

Re: Visual novels vs other mediums

Sendo, I agree about bad writing. Somehow it's really apparent in certain VNs, while in anime/manga one might be able to ignore it. Other bothersome things I've seen in lots of VNs are useless exposition and repetition. That stuff is why I can't call my dearest Dangan Ronpa games well written. I do...

Good news everyone! Selenon Rising Episode 2 has entered beta testing! If you already own the game and are interested in testing Episode 2 with some feedback, you can get back to me. Slots are very limited (and by very I mean maybe like 1 or 2 people)

Re: sound effects help or advise?

Creating realistic sound effects... entirely from scratch? Sounds extremely hard if not impossible. There don't exist "basic sounds" that are easier to synthesize than others, sounds are sounds. Even hundred million dollar Hollywood movies have some dude in a warehouse closing doors and ta...

Re: Examples of Good/ VNs?

So... any games that have personally stuck you as innovative, well-built, or simply beautiful? I'd love to hear! As far as games built in ren'py go, I found Selenon Rising to have a number of different things that I found impressive. Nice! It's good to know that people think my game isn't just a pi...

Re: VN thematic matter - the lack of sword and sorcery games

I definitely think the matter of worldbuilding trips people up when trying to make a fantasy game. I think it's because romance writers aren't necessarily the best loremasters. So, they of course default to a setting that they are more familiar with. Especially because a fantasy VN that is commercia...

Re: Would you guys all agree that artwork is the hardest par

As has been said before, it is entirely subjective what the hardest part of a visual novel is. To an artist, writing could be the hardest part, etc. And then that is assuming you are doing it all yourself and not with a team. As I am a writer and designer, writing and design comes easiest and I don'...

Re: Just a little quickie about Steam Direct...

Isn't the $100 dollar per game, instead of $100 dollar per account, enough to properly filter the floodways of Steam? I personally think that it's a good filter method. But only time will tell, I guess. Depends entirely upon how good the moderation is. The addition of moderation, not any sort of fe...
