Re: Overarching Plot or Not! VN Dating Sim question

Well, maybe instead of having an external event, your main character has a fundamental motivation which provides an overarching plot? I've toyed with an Otome idea that basically has that structure, with the main character is a new Holiday working hard to establish herself in Calender City (or she d...

Re: Multiverse concept and linked universes

I guess reading this whole thread I think that what sort of multiverse you are interested makes a great deal of difference. Undertale, Zero Escape and Amnesia: Memories are all single games where the existence of multiple endings is basically treated as a mini-multiverse-- but all existing within th...

Re: Question about how to handle routes

I think everyone has said most of what I was going to say so on the topic that the OP actually has, my group uses FreePlane software to organize routes and I personally use post it notes on a wall. (Multiple colors helps but is unnecessary.)

Re: Multiverse concept and linked universes

Multiverses are pretty interesting, and are potentially a really cool way to get the most story out of your assets. I've always though that the use of the multiverse in Amnesia: Memories, the Otome game, for the different routes was a really inspired idea--if the execution wasn't my favorite. But th...

Re: How do YOU organise your characters?

When it's just me? In a list. Sometimes not even that I basically never have so many characters that I can't keep track of them in my head. I instinctively know how various characters would react to situations and how they feel about each other based on their place in the narrative. I have never had...

Linear Chapter in Otherwise Less Linear VN

So my current ongoing project is a longer VN divided into approximately half-hour "chapters" styled like a TV season where the chapters each have a basic narrative arc that also contributes to an ongoing plot. The structure of the game is basically like so, with a mostly linear sequence wi...

Re: Writing Support

So my instinct upon reading the script is that is seems really ambitious with the number of visuals, without a lot of... substance? I understand you are trying to write around events happening and allow the reader to pick it up--I am doing something similar though perhaps more grounded--but to give ...

Re: How to create a consistent and tasteful tone and atmosph

I have found that having a clear vision of what you want your game to be goes a long way. Green Eyed Monster was a very visually interesting game, partially because the person doing the art was working together with the writer to make this surreal psychological take on their subject matter. The GUI ...

Re: Last Visual Novel You Played?

Zero Escape 3: Zero Time Dilemma. Fantastic stuff although there were some mysteries in the previous game left unanswered. D: Indeed! It was a really strange game to be honest. It was simultaneously everything I wanted in a sequel and also felt like the writers just like, forgot half of the previou...

Re: Diverse Character Dilemma

I have thought about this a lot and here are my basic conclusions. The need for "diversity" in media is actually a twofold need. 1) There needs to be an increase in the diversity of stories that get told. This means uplifting and enabling diverse voices in all creative communities and draw...

Re: Is learning Psychology necessary for basis of writing?

I don't think you need to be a student of Psychology, per se, but it does help your writing immensely if you are a student of PEOPLE. The formal study of psychology has it's own benefits of course, but the best way to learn how people tick is to simply observe those around you carefully. You can kno...

Re: How do you interact with a forum?

I am here mostly for discussion, and to stay in the headspace of VNs while I am writing. Thus I tend to hang out almost exclusively in the General Discussion, Creator Discussion and Writing Discussion forums, with field trips and jaunts to other areas as needed. (Say, I have a peculiar programming e...

Re: To info dump or not?

How long is the info dump? At what point do you, the writer, get bored when reading the dump? Is the set up reasonable for one character to tell the PC the rules of the competition? Is there an opportunity for the character to react to the rules in some interesting way? What about the person doing t...

Re: Outlining Initial Panic

Not going to lie, Outlining can be pretty complex, especially if you have a lot of options all the time. The secret is to realize that good visual novel writing is a magic trick: you want to give your audience seemingly as many meaningful options as possible while also creating to least writing poss...

Re: Minimum Viable Product (MVP)

Funny story I just watch that video the other day apropos of nothing. By the video's definition, I think for your average visual novel especially ones made with Ren'Py, the minimum viable product already exists. The minimum viable product is basically the Question or the Ren'Py tutorial. Each one co...
