Re: Ren'Py for 64 bit Linux and widescreens

Oh, the driver I'm using is the NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version 180).

Re: Ren'Py for 64 bit Linux and widescreens

Thanks for all the information. To compile Ren'Py do I have to do anything besides ./configure, make and make install? I can get some games to run with Ren'Py installed from the Synaptic package manager. I have to copy them into the folder, though, and I think I might need to move the game's sh file...

Ren'Py for 64 bit Linux and widescreens

Are there any plans to make Ren'Py fully operable under 64 bit Linux? It's what I use as my primary OS, now (on my laptop). I'm currently using Ubuntu 9.04 (the 64 bit version of the Jaunty Jackalope Beta; it's quite nice for a beta, I'd say). Also, how do I get Ren'Py to look normal (instead of str...

Re: JEdit Improvement

Is there a way to run command-line options from within JEdit? If so, I wouldn't mind using it so much instead of SciTE for this. I mean, a way to start your VN from within JEdit (like you can with SciTE—although I don't remember if the Ren'Py edition of SciTE was designed particularly for that). Ano...

Re: Ren'Py @ 5: Version 1

Now, if anyone expects to get a 9240 yen quality game for free (without resorting to piracy) -- these things have budgets in the tens of thousands of dollars mind you -- they're just being unreasonable, the spoiled 'free animu' generation. I'm guessing most of that budget goes into artwork, music, ...

Re: Ren'Py @ 5: Version 1

Personally, the best way to advertize Ren'py is to... create better games. I could agree with this, but I don't agree that it can knowledgeably be said the creators of most Ren'Py games are incompetent (a poorly done game isn't proof of that—not everyone cares about their image, and not all people ...

Re: Ren'Py @ 5: Version 1

… it would be extremely foolish to think that you could put the story parts of Mass Effect in a VN and have a hit on your hands. It just doesn't work like that. I didn't say anything about converting Mass Effect into a visual novel, and thus create a hit. I was saying games like Mass Effect were pr...

Re: Ren'Py @ 5: Version 1

… However, this could easily change. Video games of late seem to be preparing the way for the future popularity of visual novels. Many newer games are, what I would call, 90% visual novel. Take Mass Effect, for instance. Most of that game, sans the animation and battle scenes, could be done in a vi...

Re: Ren'Py @ 5: Version 1

… Unless you mean outside Japan - and in that case, it already happened. Sorry, I guess I didn't read your whole statement. Anyway, I wouldn't say it has happened outside of Japan yet. I meant the whole world, including Japan, though. So, according to what I meant, Ren'Py would have to have ...

I am aware of how this has been the case, and I stand by my statement. The Japanese, of all, should understand innovation best. To think that it couldn't be big outside of Japan is a highly conservative way of life.

Re: Ren'Py @ 5: Version 1

To be honest, I don't think Ren'Py has an audience of millions of users. Maybe a thousand or so users, ten on the outside. That may be true, but I do honestly believe that with the proper advertising, Ren'Py's popularity would by far outweigh that of the visual novel engines made before it, and eve...

Re: Ren'Py @ 5: Version 1

Does every thread have to turn into … about text editors? Sorry for contributing to that. I didn't know this was a trend (I haven't been paying attention to the forums in a while.) I wasn't aware of the Mac issue, either. I might argue the barely documented text file-thing for SciTE, though ...

Re: Ren'Py @ 5: Version 1

Umm... Ever since Ren'py made the move to JEdit my progress has slowed down considerably … I preferred SciTE, myself, too. I've never been a huge fan of GUI-based Java applications, although I'm sure this one is convenient for some. Would it be possible to give us a choice as to which we use? I act...
