Re: VNs with Second-Person Narration?

I'm not sure if you'd count them as visual novels (they're not really "visual"), but most (all?) of the Choice of Games interactive novels that I've seen on Steam use second-person narration.

Re: Anime Expo 2017

Scribbles is right, I pay for a ticket to go. Hence "guest" since I am a "guest" at the convention. In the context of conventions, the term "guest" is usually reserved for people who are invited to the convention and (in most cases) financially compensated for it. Gues...

Re: How do you feel about flipping asymmetrical sprites?

Depends on how blatant it is. I have less of an eye for detail, so I might miss things like which side a characters' hair is parted on until I've spent several hours with a game and have gotten used to seeing it a certain way. Then, you have stuff like this, where you can immediately see the problem...

Re: The Invincible Protagonist

So what happens when later on, there's a story beat where you find out you COULD have had a more stable, higher-paying job, if a trusted ally hadn't lied to you early on? The protag character should probably be upset at this. And yet... I don't think the player would care, since through their metag...

Re: Western vs. Eastern Storytelling

To get to the more general point about how western stories tend to be more conflict-driven than eastern stories (and the fact that eastern readers seem to have a greater appetite for "slice of life" stories), I think it's worth pointing out that even in eastern stories that are conflict dr...

Writing dialog for characters of different genders

On several occasions, I've seen the topic come up of writing characters of different genders (e.g. female writers trying to write male characters, or male writers trying to write female characters), so I thought I'd share several resources that I've found helpful. Roughly in (ascending) order of how...

Re: Necrobarista [urban fantasy, suspense]

We've been really thrilled with the response that the game has gotten so far, and we're working hard to do our best to meet everyone's expectations, so thanks to everyone who's posted encouraging feedback. We did a bit of a "press tour" at GDC last month; here are some press write-ups for ...

Re: Why don't we have VN of the Year Awards?

This is a little bit off topic, but I feel obliged to mention that VN devs can (and do) submit their games to general (indie) games contests and events. Christine Love's "Ladykiller in a Bind" won the IGF award for Excellence in Narrative last month, and Lucy Blundell's "One Night Sta...

Re: What music to listen to while drawing?

I just watched this video and remembered this thread: Video: You probably shouldn't listen to music when drawing The main point is main in the video (namely, that people tend to be less productive with auditory stimulation of any kind), though I think there's a point to be made that sometimes, you c...

Re: The Buzz - a visual novel podcast

So, a bit of an update: The Buzz has now released a total of 30 episodes. ( You can view all episodes on Soundcloud, here .) And episode 30 is a bit of a "sunset" episode, which is to say, it's the last episode we're doing before going on indefinite hiatus. This podcast is over two years o...

Re: Eliminating all forms of "to be": Active Voice

If I want to convey a scene or image to the reader, then I try to avoid forms of "to be" (passive voice). But not every line of the story is trying to convey a scene. Sometimes, you just want to convey raw information. Saying "Kim had been a middle school teacher for 10 years" is...

Re: How do you avoid "convenient" or "coincidental" plotting

Usually, things in a story that feel arbitrary and implausible can be fixed with proper foreshadowing, though this mostly applies to things that happen mid-story that make a reader go, "Huh?" So it applies less to your example: Jane disappeared seven years ago leaving behind her younger si...
