I like the second background better, but you should only use pictures you have the right to use.

It doesn't sound that complicated to me either. But maybe that's because I've had my nose stuck in Ren'Py tutorials. Hard part would be keeping track of all the paths but any complicated VN has that.

I use SAI for drawing and coloring and Photoshop CS4 for everything else, especially design. But I've dabbled with a lot of programs.

Insure the images are in the game directory and make sure you have the right filenames. Copy paste to insure they're right. It's easy to make a mistake you didn't notice.
