I like using 'they', too, but only when referring to an unspecified entity (like 'one', or even 'the student' when used as a sort of collective for all students). If you're not planning to give rabbit a gender then you could use plural pronouns. I find they/their preferable to the impersonality of It, at least when referring to people. It usually strikes me as clinical, cold, and dehumanising. However, you're not referring to a human, you're referring to Rabb...
