Re: Voice Acting in VN games

Fate/Stay Night is the first "real" commercial release of a former 同人 (doujin) circle. It's popular (as is ひぐらしのなく頃に (Higurashi no Naku Koro ni), which also has no voice acting), but it still probably qualifies as "low budget". It's also over five years old by now.

Re: Voice Acting in VN games

In my experience, almost all commercial Japanese visual novels have voice acting. The only exceptions I can think of are either very old or very low-budget.

Re: Themes for VN games

A large majority of commercial Japanese visual novels have explicit sex scenes, which correlates strongly with romance. However, all of the following also exist: Short non-commercial visual novels on just about any subject. Commercial visual novels without explicit sex scenes, and often without roma...

Re: The Dating Sim / VN global survey!

Consider the following hypothetical situation. Forum A is a bishoujo game forum, so everyone from forum A prefers bishoujo games over otome games. Forum B is an otome game forum, so everybody from forum B prefers otome games over bishoujo games. 20 people from forum A vote for bishoujo games and 50 ...

Re: [NaNoRenO 2010] The Silent Wolf

It's the story that Sebastian's Mother is reading out before they get interrupted by Theirn. That seems more plausible than any other explanation I can think of, but still somewhat iffy. Like you yourself said, it's not the kind of story I would expect a mother to read to her six year old son, espe...

Re: Getting in the games industry

SQL,MYSQL, and HTML are DEFINITELY programming languages. SQL is domain-specific language used for manipulating databases. It is technically a programming language in the sense that it executes commands, and there are extensions to the core language that make it act more like a general-purpose prog...

Re: Getting in the games industry

SQL is a query language. HTML is a text markup language. Neither is a programming language. Learning them won't teach you programming.

That said, both SQL and HTML are used in the game industry in various ways.

Re: Do I look fat in this dress?

The (hypothetical) husband isn't using the word "fat". The (hypothetical) husband is using the word "yes", because he was asked a direct yes/no question, because he doesn't think the question warrants a more nuanced answer, and because he doesn't want to come across as an attempt...

Re: Do I look fat in this dress?

I thought the point of that theme was that there is no right answer , not that you're supposed to lie. I see two things going on in that question: Someone framing a subtle issue as a false dichotomy of two extremes. Someone asking for honest feedback when they aren't emotionally ready to receive tha...

Re: When to announce?

It's possible to give the impression that your game is further from being finished than it actually is without outright lying. Looking at a couple of WIP threads (damn you for making me look!), it seems to be the norm not to explicitly state how close your project is to completion. Just post a typic...

Re: [NaNoRenO 2010] The Silent Wolf

How did this escape notice for four months? Overall, this felt fairly rough and unpolished, both in the text and the visuals. I know this is to be expected for a NaNoRenO project, but just a bit more proof-reading would have helped a lot. The sound effects also felt cheesy to me. The story is a bit ...

Re: Finding A Prom Date by Arithra & Vohalika

Normally I prefer very short visual novels, but this one left me wanting more. It would have been nice to see how the prom went. Not for the romance possibilities, but for the funnies. Aside from that, great job!

In a word: yes. At least with 3D in the style you are using. A style that makes heavy use of hand-drawn 2D texture maps would blend in better with hand-drawn 2D sprites.

Re: When to announce?

By that logic someone with tastes similar to your own could just ignore the WIP thread and read it when it's released, pretending never to have seen it. I already try to avoid WIP threads. However, it is precisely the impatient types - those who want to see the movie right after seeing the tr...
