Re: How to create immersive dialogue that progresses the scene?
I'm of the mind that not all character banter has to specifically advance the plot, but it is important that it in one way or another enhances the overall experience. In particular, fantasy settings offer lots of opportunity for this in that they allow you to learn more about not just a character bu...

Re: A very long common route and late character introductions?
I'm not sure if I would actually agree with this approach. Of course, it's entirely subjective and will depend on the tastes of your audience, but I sometimes find it overwhelming if a VN has too many tiny little choices. And I don't feel like there's any "tedium" to just reading through ...

Re: A very long common route and late character introductions?
So, assuming that your VN has a skip feature, I think the problem is less "will my audience be willing to read through this multiple times?" and more "will my audience be willing to read through this the first time?" This, absolutely. One thing that might help hold audience atte...

Re: A very long common route and late character introductions?
@jdhthegr8 If I can give some tips to you I wouldn't split your VN up in parts unless the stories can stand on their own (kind of like the first and second book in a series). Readers might get annoyed by the fact they have to pay for the next part if you market it like that, and the choices in part...

Re: A very long common route and late character introductions?
Sounds like you're in a pretty similar situation to me. I'm looking at possibly 80-100k words before there are choices that seriously impact the story. The thing is, once the choices start happening there's a bit of a "butterfly effect" that causes a lot of unique combinations of events (c...

Re: Just finished this animation for my VN
I'm a sucker for serious military settings. Don't see enough of them in visual novels IMO when they're ripe for good drama and world-building

Re: Question on art references
Haven't reached the point of making serious art for my own thing, but I've found that Picrew is GREAT for making reasonably accurate representations of a character. It's helped people reading my work have a decent idea of what my characters are supposed to look like while I'm still making it. It's s...

Re: Writing an organized script
I just reached this point in my own project- Finally having a completed outline of the overall story and starting with actual script. For me I'm a total sucker for spreadsheets and stat-tracking. It serves several important purposes to me: keep track of my progress, give a visual indicator of which ...

Re: Default character placeholder label doesn't seem to update correctly
Interesting. For now while I have only placeholders, defining the location works but I'm going to have to suck it up and get some sort of art made so I can experiment more with this. Actually now that I think of it I'm sure there are plenty of free-to-use sprite placeholders on here with a few poses...

Re: Default character placeholder label doesn't seem to update correctly
Adding "normal" didn't fix that particular issue even though defining the position did, but I notice you mentioned to "name the image accordingly", and since I'm not working with any images right now I suppose that would explain why. I suppose to be more specific in my question, ...

Re: Default character placeholder label doesn't seem to update correctly
Huh, interesting. After going further also I noticed that it seemed to no longer be an issue when I defined a position for the character at center and so had done that for the time being.

Default character placeholder label doesn't seem to update correctly
Hello all, I am just getting started with doing the first actual Ren'Py script out of my written story. At this point in time I have no graphics so I'm just letting the placeholder character do the job of showing poses and how it changes. I noticed that having another show statement with the same ch...

Re: Critique my writing- opening scene
Thanks for your response! This is indeed my first notable piece of creative writing. A certain amount of distance in the opening scene is intentional, as this narrative "voice" will mainly be used in transitions and one or two scenes of larger-scale exposition (though I'm not trying to use...

Thanks for reading it over and providing your comments! That does look like a good site to get more input from so I'll definitely sign up for that. To respond to what you said point-by-point: • "...machinery; Tractors." --> "...machinery: tractors." OR "...machinery. Tractor...

Re: What do you like in a VN protagonist?
One thing I want to do well is having a character who is established as having done something bad (not "you're a complete monster" bad but more of "wow, that guy's an ass") while still giving them an opportunity at redeeming themselves. Even if they don't do that however, I want ...
