Re: DOS Games

I still play DOS games! They bring back a lot of childhood memories. My favorite is, by far, "Inherit the Earth: Quest for the Orb," which is about ... well, furries, I guess. But back then, that was a new concept of sorts and didn't have the stigma it has today. It's about the far future ...

Re: using partial voiceovers ?

Getting voice overs for free is very possible . I've never paid for a voice over I ever needed. The only stipulation is that you have to motivate your cast more than you would a paid actor to submit lines (because, after all, they are doing it for free). But you would honestly be surprised by the qu...

Re: Are real world place names copyrighted?

On the other hand, using existing place names - or ones close to them - also has the benefit that people have a lot of emotional investment in those place names already. If you're reading a mediaeval-style story and your characters come across a place called Baghdad, you can expect it to be a centr...

Re: Are real world place names copyrighted?

No, they're not copyrighted, it's just taboo if you're not trying to recreate the real-life locations themselves, because readers would get really confused and distracted. I know I wouldn't want to read about the magical forest Elf city of Baghdad, because I would constantly be thinking in my head &...

Re: A little help and advice?

Well, I don't know about other people, but I use an image mapper (any one will do) to get the coordinates for rectangles in an area.

What are the few lines of code around the line giving errors? Maybe Ren'Py doesn't recognize what you want to dissolve?

Re: A little help and advice?

Well, the basic theory would be to call a label that has the navigation to go somewhere. And then you would call that label when you want the player to travel. That's probably not much help, but I don't know what kind of framework your game is running yet.

Re: PSA: Go Commercial Now!

Over 9000!?!?

I'm making all of my games free, even though I spend waaay too much on them from my own pocket. But I've seen some crappy commercial games that make me go, "I can do that, and I can do that for free! ... and possibly even better, too." ^^

Jo'ogn, you're acting like a troll. You have to compromise on some things rather than be completely stubborn with your views, because, honestly, you are more wrong than you are right. There aren't enough artists who would agree with you to make you seem justified.

Re: Opinions about making games as a hobby/working for free

The thing that I do not like is offering help and then dropping out. If one doesnt want to help, doesn't offer it. That is my guideline. But you are right, nobody has to give a damn about this selfish guideline of mine. It sounds like you've been burnt before by someone dropping out. I understand t...

Re: Opinions about making games as a hobby/working for free

Oh for me this is pretty much an "ego thing", because this artist is too smug to care for others, just for themselves. I have experienced such ppl in my life. Either in hobby projecs as well as in paid 'professional works'. In both areas they tend to be destructive. Actively or passively ...

Re: Opinions about making games as a hobby/working for free

In my opinion, the reason it is hard to get others to work for you for free is because, when you ask someone who has no connection to the project, it is not a hobby, but a job. And why give yourself more work? A hobby means that you want to do it, and you may not realize that at that point, you're t...

Re: 3d art vs hand drawn art

I was playing a game recently (commercial) that had a decent basic idea, but the game was 3D. And that just ruined the entire thing for me. If you're going to do 3D, you have to do it well, I think. It needs to be as fluent as it can be to match real life and such. But what really did that game in i...

Re: Asking for help: translating Japanese words

I'm a fan of Kamen Rider, too! ^_^
However, the picture is too low quality to really translate well. The characters blur together in some places. And with Kanji, it's really important to see the details. ^^;
