Re: List software you use here

I'm windoze only (XP and Win7). Graphics: Gimp - colouring scanned-in pencil or ink drawings. I used to use Photoshop, but then had to switch to a cheaper (i.e. free) alternative. I found the switch difficult because of a few small but nonetheless irritating UI decisions. To be fair, I think that a ...

Re: List software you use here

I don't use either Photoshop or GIMP, so I don't know what any of the fuss is about. I use SAI for digital art work. I also use a Bamboo Fun Tablet, which is getting pretty old but it's still working fine and I don't have the money to upgrade. For filters/photo manipulation, I use Photoshop Element...

Re: Ellipsis

Words are the minority component in any communication. Body language, tone of voice and even the speed of delivery are all significant. This is true, for actual human interaction. But when you're writing a VN, you're not going to be bombarding the reader with all that information all the time, sure...

Re: Can anyone help recover my script?

I'm really sorry that you've lost some work. I know it's bolting the door after the horse has bolted, but I find that this free program is really good: http://www.spacejock.com/yWriter5.html It's a word processor that's designed to work with lots of little short scenes, and it automatically backs up...

Re: [WIP] Thinking (demo released)

Hey there, just posting to add my voice to the others encouraging you. As well as the neat music, I liked the way that you used sound effects (feet on the gravel, the drum, etc.) I thought that was very good and really helped in making the characters feel "present". (I know it'll feel diff...

Re: Ellipsis

I like ellipses. As far as ways of showing pauses or silence go, ellipses are highly economical. Why waste a words on something that can be said with just three dots? The problem as I see it is that ellipses don't add any further information. Consider: Chris: "So, are we going to meet up later...

Wow, nice drawings! I'm lucky if I can get different views of the same character to look like they're even related! Good luck with making your game(s).

Re: Fading in text in the message box

Once again, I agree with Jake here. If the player wants to read and you're not letting them read as fast as they can, you're making them stare at your visual effect for every single box of text. That's a lot of accumulated irritation over the course of a VN. There isn't one single arrangement of ti...

Re: Fading in text in the message box

The slow text mode is one that I personally don't use, so I'd invite feedback from people who use it as to how it could be made better, before I go and change it. To me, it seems that the purpose of it is to delay people's reading, for some purpose... perhaps to give people more time to appreciate ...

Re: Textbox Tutorial for GIMP

Well, I've made a custom image for the text box background as per the tutorial, but aligning that with the actual text in the game seems impossible. The default box seems to adjust itself depending on the maximum size of the text in the game, but my custom box doesn't. Hell, it doesn't even align it...

Re: Being Overcritical of Your Own Work

I think this is the dilemma of any creative artist. If you look at what you've produced and your only thought is "hey -rockinnn!" then you're not going to get any better. (And you probably wouldn't have posted this thread anyway!) You just have to accept that any artist - including Turner,...

Re: Creative ways to get an ending

I would say that if you decide to get either girl A or B or C, you have to think of how well you treated her or the things you said, in fact there should be an action in an early part of the game where either one of these girls think of you as a loser, so your scenario has to be one where you have ...

Re: The Importance of Exposition

Unless you're writing some good old-fashioned hard sf, that is ^_^ but they certainly don't make it like they used to. You can say that again! [Insert usual moan about current state of SF writing] On a brighter note, I found a good new-to-me writer recently; have you read any Richard Morgan? His fi...

Re: Stand on your mark (question about directing)

(I can't look at your demos because I'm on a reaaally slow dial-up, so please forgive if I'm missing the point.) What's the problem with telegraphing to the player that a new character is arriving? VNs aren't real-time, so reflex times aren't an issue. Otherwise, you could center your character whil...

Re: The Importance of Exposition

I just wanted to add a general comment on exposition - IMO it's partly a trust issue. You see, not only do you actually not have to add all the details that you know about how the story world works, you actually shouldn't. You just have to add the parts that are relevant to the story. The Turkey Cit...
