Re: When it comes to trying to make the MC neutral.

I'm okay with both. I've played games with neutral avatars (think most Bioware games) and those with very set ones (think the Witcher) and liked both. There are advantages (and disadvantages) with both options. The nice thing about a neutral avatar is that I can truly create the character the way I ...

Re: What's more fun: few characters, or many characters?

I think stories (of which VNs are one example) can work fine with very few characters. There are novels that work great with only 1-2 characters, so it's possible. With that said, I think it depends a lot on the story you're trying to tell. A grand, sweeping epic is going to feel "off" if ...

Oooh, this is super cool. :) I have no idea if I'll ever find an excuse to use it, but I love what you've done. :)

I wonder whether writing is the best place for this post or whether you might be more likely to get a helpful response in Ren'Py questions and announcements.

Re: Visual novels and "Interactivity"

So here's the question, do you think interactivity as an important part of visual novel ? Why ? Yes. If I wanted to read a comic book, I will read a comic book. (I do occasionally read/enjoy kinetic novels, but it's an occasional thing in large part because I truly do believe that if I want a linea...

Re: Do you think there is a market for non-anime visual novels?

I don't think the boundaries between genres are that obvious, but I definitely agree that customers should know what they're buying. I guess the topic we're approaching now is what counts as a VN and what doesn't. In a way that's kind of subjective. Personally I consider the Ace Attorney games to b...

Re: Do you think there is a market for non-anime visual novels?

Be rest assured, I don't intend to change my vision for the sake of "fitting" into the genre. My concern is that the term "visual novel" sets up certain expectations for people. Maybe it's better not to use it in advertising. I think you almost *have* to state what type of game ...

Re: Do you think there is a market for non-anime visual novels?

There's a market for everything. (Personally I prefer a non-anime aesthetic, but I'm also a market of one.) Is it a huge market? My guess is no. But there isn't a huge market for ELVNs to the best of my knowledge. (And my guess is that if you want to chase riches, developing VNs probably isn't the p...

Re: Game Direction

I could see an RPG working, or something where you're point building (similar to Long Live the Queen) or even a conventional VN. But I'd also agree that (to me) writing it first makes sense. Maybe one format works really well (or doesn't work) once you have a base game. Maybe the whole concept falls...

Re: Game Direction

I'm pretty much just going to echo parttimestorier. :) First, everything can work and be awesome. Somewhere out there a woman decided that a pigeon dating sim was a good idea and it actually made for a pretty cool game. Go figure. :) One warning I'll give about prologues is that, if they're not all ...

Re: Should you cite your sources when putting factual info in your VN?

I second the idea of citing sources in your credits. It keeps the citations from disrupting the game play while also showing that you've done your research (and giving credit where due).

Re: How to not self-insert

What I've found is that stories can survive without very good characters (think "The DaVinci Code"), but can rarely survive without a plot. While having a good characters clearly enhances a novel, an awful lot of the time characters exist less because they're fun and more because they push...

Re: How to not self-insert

I use my imagination. Heavily. :) Sometimes characters are based off of someone I know or a fictional person. Most often, they're created to serve the plot. (e.g. "I need someone to get the main character to do A, B and C and someone with these views will add the most interesting perspective&qu...

Re: Questions about artist quotes and pay structure

I would NOT advice to go with a salary if you are a little indie production. I do not think it would cost more, but on a legal point of view, it can cause a lot of worries. I wanted to echo this. I am very much not a lawyer, but once things become salaried, there are often legal implications that c...

Re: Good Examples of Sprites Talking to Each Other?

Your wish is my command! When I only had two or three sprites on screen at a time, I used this: show cl at left behind vi show vi at center: ease .5 zoom 1.05 # Using the "ease + zoom" command means that the character goes from her earlier default position at a size to 5% larger than befor...
