If you search options.rpy, there should be a commented-out section with the name of the default font in it (DejaVuSans.ttf, I think?). If you remove the # from the beginning of the line, and then replace that font name with yours (making sure you put your font in the game directory), that should be ...

Ugh, I'm such an idiot - I think the error was because I was using a savefile from before I added the event dispatcher file to the game directory - really really sorry for making you waste your time! (explains all the other random errors I was getting too, tbh!) It seems to work perfectly fine now. ...
