Re: Vector or Raster? What Art Program Do You Use?

EDIT: I just realized I contributed to a Necrothread, but I stand by my suggestions for tools and techniques below! Raster. Vector tools are still available to me if I want smooth lines and shapes that I can adjust, but I'll usually use a lot of raster tools available to me to get the images the wa...

Re: One Night Stand [Drama][Mystery] - Now on Steam Greenlig

This looks great! Love the rotoscoping, and it's a really interesting concept! Just gave it a thumbs up on Steam, and I'll be trying out the NaNoRenO demo version when I get home!

Re: Fight Scenes and Violence in VNs?

I'm cool with violence in VNs, (in full disclosure, I'm working on a VN that has a LOT of fight scenes) and there are a few ways you can make it exciting, and appropriate: You can follow the Telltale Games route, and turn it into a little quicktime minigame. The upside is it's IMMEDIATELY engaging. ...

Re: Anyone know good scenario planning/flowchart software?

I also gotta throw my hat in for Twine - it's super intuitive, has a nice visual layout for your flowcharts, and the best part is, you can export a working version of your flowchart for game testing. It's what I'm using right now to get everything arranged.

Re: What is creativity for?

Never call it being "creative" to employers, call it being a "PROBLEM SOLVER". Not every job wants "creativity", because people tend to think that creative people can only work when they aren't given constraints. In reality, most creative jobs I've had (illustrating for...

Re: What do you want to see in VN?

what do you miss in VN? As creators and players? I don't play enough of them to "miss" anything, but I prefer shorter style projects - the less time I need to dedicate to a game or show, the better. Granted, I am a pretty busy guy, so I know this isn't a majority opinion :). What do you w...

Re: How to make a detailed outline simpler?

Is this a branching path game, or a kinetic novel? For branching paths, you probably ought to stick to details on the notecards that are specific for that path. Anything that's not important to why the story is going left instead of right should be omitted. A notecard might only read: START Kids get...

Re: Questions about Playtesting

Game flow, mechanics, and bugs are what they are looking for as well. For just a basic test play. Ask the basics. Was it fun? Is there anything glaring bad you hated? Would you recommend this game to others? etc. Take group at face value. First of all, thank you very much for your response! My curr...

Questions about Playtesting

I'm slowly getting the alpha together for my first visual novel, and I started thinking about how I'm going to handle play testing. How do you guys collect information from your playtesters? Do you guys stick in the same room as your playtesters and watch them, or do you use questionnaires/surveys? ...

Re: Do I have to make my own music?

https://freemusicarchive.org/ This is where I've been grabbing stuff for my soundtrack. It's all Creative Commons; you have to check individual licenses on tracks, but most of them are free to use for noncommercial works, as long as you credit the artist. It's got a range of different styles and gen...

Re: Space Wanderer [Adventure | Sci-Fi | Fantasy]

Any story previews? Got a one sentence elevator pitch to titillate us? I'm super into space sims right now (I've put a bit of money into Elite Dangerous and Star Citizen), so this might be right up my alley!

Re: What is GUI?

The main menu would be considered part of the Graphic User Interface, but the dialogue boxes don't have to be. If you're meant to press a "next button", or something to progress to the next bit of dialogue, then it would be, but if the dialogue box doesn't need to be interacted with (via k...

Hi everyone! I'm Vimi, and I'm a children's book illustrator and game designer living and working in Rochester, NY! I'm just starting work on a visual novel, combining my work experience with children's fiction, and kid's games, and I'm a biiiit overwhelmed. I'm reading a lot into game narrative des...

- Does red fit the emotion conveyed in the scene? If yes, then probably you should go with this one. ^100% that. EDIT: Sorry, new to the forum, realized I should have elaborated on that position! As long as you've established where the characters are in a scene, you can do a lot of fun stuff with b...
