Re: Writing Likeable Murderers?
Murderers don't have to be likable to make them likable. If you make a tiny hint towards there being something human about them, even if you just show them eating breakfast, people will wonder if there isn't something sympathetic to them - even if that something is never revealed. This is my favori...

Re: Composer needed! (For the WNKN Project)
This is just my opinion, but I think a potential composer would fare better if you finished your draft before any music is written. That way, he or she could read the script and get an idea of what would work best with the story.

Re: Confused on description for visual novels...
So I've always wondered what's the 'right' way to do description. It's a little confusing to me. I don't know if I should describe the looks of the characters, scenery, and other such things or not. In the actual game they will be visual but I've had people say I should describe them while others s...

Re: What is done in the project development phase?
I've never spearheaded a project before, so feel free to take my advice with a large grain of salt. What I have to say is based on what I've observed. I think for a first effort, finding a director may be better. To some extent the answer may depend on the size of the project---someone new to direct...

Re: Will a dialogue-only Visual Novel work?
This is a creative medium--or should be. The artist can create what they dream of and need not be bound by convention. If everyone was only bound by pre-existing conventions, then we wouldn't have digital: a love story, or any other number of innovative games. For some people a visual novel must be...

Re: Will a dialogue-only Visual Novel work?
A dialogue-only story would be a better fit for another medium, such as theater, or, as SundownKid has suggested, could be expressed with the help of comic panels. Visual novels can be image-rich, but their backbone is still writing. That doesn't mean you couldn't do it in a visual novel, though. I ...

While I'm sorry to see your old human sprites go, I'm glad to see you're working on this project again and have a clear goal in mind.

Re: How many demos should I make before recruitment?
A big thing I, and I think any artist, would want to know is the scope of the project. Specifically when it comes to the art - how many backgrounds, characters - how many poses/expressions/outfits, CGs, gui elements, etc, you're going to need. This is something you definitely want to have planned o...

Re: How many demos should I make before recruitment?
That's not necessarily an indication of definite success. I've seen many impressive demos whose projects have become vaporware.Tyrantauranox wrote:One impressive demo is enough to get my attention. I need to get the strong impression that the game will be made, no matter what.

Re: Get that thing off your chest... Now...
I have a friend with Bi-polar disorder, so I can see where JJupiterJump is coming from. When he's on his meds, he's almost a completely different person than when he's off them. Fortunately, he almost never bullies me when he's off his meds, but I know he's bullied other mutual friends to the point...

Re: Get that thing off your chest... Now...
Now for the next part. It might be slightly (I tried not to go into detail) triggering, or uncomfortable for some people so I put it in a spoiler. I'm not treating your "friend's" addiction as a character flaw, but it's clearly exacerbating whatever issues he does have. He shouldn't have ...

Re: Archetyping without Stereotyping
I still don't like the 'dark' imagery associated with the Orcs in Tolkien's work. I would too be legitimately angry if I were an Orc marginalized to the fringes and categorized as evil creature by every other race out there. The matter of nature vs nurture comes to mind. I'm not fond of that either...

Re: The quagmire of the harem protagonist
Yes. I generally don't like harem stories for the reasons you've listed, and instead prefer stories that satirize those tropes. Very insightful post, by the way.Kailoto wrote:I was wondering what you all thought about the subject. Do you see the same problems with harem settings?

Re: Archetyping without Stereotyping
I hate how some authors though just present something in black and white terms. They paint whole nations, as 'those idiots who wear blue hats' or worse entire races are characterized as 'shifty cut-throat thieves'. Here's a question for you to consider: are those beliefs imprinted on the story as a...
