This is ridiculous.. every novel is a derivative in some way- ei Game of Thrones was based on a war of roses. But why is having a novel set to have a triology on your list? Right now i'm doing the lineart so after I finish that i'll be sure to help you shade.

Try using a set of photographs to inspire you to write scenes. Take a break from writing, having someone to proofread maybe, and then go over your whole script trying to imrpove. Make sure your characters personalities are fully developed and you have a sense of what's going to happen in your story....

Try gesture drawing.
What I do is draw stickmen and I envision the chracters pose in my head,
I personally draw from the head, then make my way down.
I wouldn't make to many sprites unless your confident in having to draw that many for diff. characters.
