Writing. Definitely. Mostly because it takes the longest. XD It's fun, but to write a proper branching VN, you need a SERIOUS amount of text. It's a bit overwhelming, to be honest.

Tone is so important when determining a satisfying ending. Some people have touched on it. If your game has a lighter tone, a tragic ending just won't work. It'll throw people for a loop instead of making them cry or be touched. Personally, I PREFER happy endings. Watching everyone die at the end is...
