Re: Newbie question: Art or writing? Which is more important

A successful game to me is one that you can expect your average gamer to have heard of (and actually managed a decent profit). Gamers do not play visual novels. It's a completely different market. It's bizarre to even compare them. Asking the average gamer to recognize a visual novel is like asking...

Re: Newbie question: Art or writing? Which is more important

That depends on how you define 'popular' and 'horrific'. :) What makes a game a success, in your book? Money? Money in relation to investment? Number of players? Plenty of indies make out okay with graphics ranging from mediocre to bizarre. Sure, they don't reach the heights of success of the top m...

Re: [Critique Please] Horror game art style; also need BETAS

I prefer the second style, personally, although I would agree that it looks a bit too soft for a horror game. There are two problems I have with the vector style. The first is that nearly every game uses a very similar style, and after a while this gets boring. The second is that it can look a litt...

Re: How much time do you spend with your characters?

My order of writing tends to go: Setting ---> Characters ---> Plot based on both I've found that heavily detailing all character histories before working out the smaller plot details makes the amount of smaller plot details larger, as well as makes them more streamlined and interesting (and relevant...

Re: [Critique Please] Art style for a horror game.

Personally I like the first one better. I can get the feeling you'd be going for with the sketchy look, but it also feels too "soft" for a horror game. When I looked at the first picture I had a bit of a shiver down my spine, maybe it's the pose but it FELT sinister to me. And you did say...

Re: [Critique Please] Art style for a horror game.

I think the second style looks too unfinished. But then, it's hard to really say what the second style will look like, because as you say, it is unfinished! I still think though that even if you are going for a more sketchy style, you'd probably want to at least partially line art the sketches. The...

[Critique Please] Horror game art style; also need BETAS.

Hi there. I and two other people are in the works to create a full-length horror game that is well underway as far as writing and programming, and working heavily on the visual section at this time. The game is a horror/drama boy's love game, with a similar writing layout to Animamundi (in that it w...

Re: Newbie question: Art or writing? Which is more important

Hopefully my post will help a bit. A lot of people mention that games like Higurashi are very popular despite art. However, one must also look at the market Higurashi was targeting. The Japanese, who are notoriously known for making things popular despite them being unpopular to the Western markets....
