Re: Personality System

More positive? At times yes, though it depends on the context, and what you mean by 'positive.' As of the moment I have three personality types (though the 'serious' personality is more an absence of the joker and angry traits than a unique personality) and some of these will be more attractive to c...

Re: Personality System

* Picking Archtypes: Not in an overt way - the game as it now stands opens with Jin about to undergo his admissions interview. How you respond to the first question (or first few questions, I'm still thinking on that) will give Jin a base personality which will influence many of the choices and flav...

Re: Personality System

Thanks for the comments guys: Personally, I think the best choice is to just give the POV character a personality you choose, rather than trying to make it customizable. I mean, if you let the player choose, you'll have to riddle your code with if statements, trying to match the user's choices. My g...

Personality System

Hey guys! So, I'm reworking the Elect, and I've decided that I want to allow a certain degree of customization when it comes to the protagonist's personality. This is in-line with our discussions here where the consensus seemed to be, and I wholeheartedly agree, that empty-vessel, cardboard heroes a...

Re: Recommended books on writing/storytelling?

Here's something that looks interesting, although the price is killer @_@: http://kotaku.com/360077/quests-design-theory-and-history-in-games-and-narrative While the art of story-telling is, I think, hard to teach, one thing I think even the best writers need is a good editor. In lieu of one, there ...

Re: Raidaa no Asahi [v1.0 released]

It seems that the majority of you didn't really like the fanservice. Had there been CGs accompanying those scenes (Asaga making Kaito grope her, Ikkari falling on top of Chigara), then would your opinion of those scenes changed? - I actually thought the groping incident was character development - ...

Re: Raidaa no Asahi [v1.0 released]

Episode 1 "Liveblogging" - Buttons galore - Uhm, how do I get out of the information page? - Nice work on the ship! - The bgs are muted but I can tell they’re well made  The character art has personality and I can easily tell the characters apart – the higher quality of the BGs kind of ma...

Re: GDC: Deconstructing the Best Interactive Storytelling

What it's good at, though, is with character relationships, with making you love its world. By the end of PW3, you really feel like you've gone through so many things with the characters of the games that they're like family (well, I'm a lonely person ^^;...). Quite frankly that's really all I look...

GDC: Deconstructing the Best Interactive Storytelling

http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=17537 I'm not familiar with a lot of these games (I'm sure to get Bioshock eventually) but I agree wholeheartedly with Planescape being on that list. Except for: The fact that as many routes and important decisions there were in-game, there was ...

Ooops just remembered another one: the Space Hawks sub-series of the Choose Your Own Adventure books. I liked CYOAs with continuing plotlines. ^_^

Re: Choose your own adventure books

Before I discovered video game RPGs, the choose your own adventure type books were my primary means of interactive entertainment. Like Jake I grew very partial to the Lone Wolf series - although I actually stopped when I discovered the novelizations, as I enjoyed the novelizations more (even with al...

VNs and Comedy

http://anime.miao.us/archives/2008/02/12/1272/ Initially I thought the above post was going to deal with what Jason would consider to be a good VN, but it mostly deals with his views on good comedy, whether in an anime, manga or VN. Writing for comedic effect is, I think, much more difficult than a...

Re: Would you play a VN if there was no romance involved?

The story I have in mind is what happens to Cinderella after the "happily ever after". It's a piece written by a good friend of mine. So when you say no "romance" do you just mean no "wooing" stage - as in, the couple is already predetermined and in love? Or would Cind...
