Your jumping before the variable is saved. This at least looks like to me what is happening. Therefore, if you do not have a default choice saved in your init or above the current script. the 'route' IS undefined.

Just switch the jump and the $ route change in your menu and it should work.

The main VN that got me hooked was Tenshin Ranman lucky or unlucky by Yuzu soft. I can't remember how or why I got into it. but the intro theme and the cute characters got me hooked.
