Re: How (Not) To Make Money As a Solo Dev
Interesting... Yeah, I hadn't launched a game on Steam until recently, so I do think the advice is skewed toward smaller platforms like itch.io. Not sure why I waited so long to try Steam, but you really do notice the effects of the vastly larger userbase. Kinda sad, because I really like itch.io, ...

Re: How (Not) To Make Money As a Solo Dev
Thanks for sharing this! I'm interested to find out a bit more about your experience with press releases. When you say it didn't work, do you mean: 1) The media outlets did not respond, or 2) You earned some previews and articles, but they did not direct any significant traffic to your distribution...

Re: How (Not) To Make Money As a Solo Dev
I'd agree with your belief that press releases seem to have little impact. Unless they somehow interest a reviewer enough to review the game, I don't think they do much. I did have a fair amount of luck with sending Steam Keys out to reviewers. Not ALL reviewed the game, but at least *some* did, whi...

Re: What are some things you hate about romantic Visual Novels??
Related to #3, I really despise when it is impossible to not end up with someone. I.e. I want to be able to totally fail as the protagonist. If I am an unlikeable jerk who makes no effort, I hate being handed a 'consolation' romance (usually the childhood friend) as a default fallback. Ooof, yeah, ...

Re: What are some things you hate about romantic Visual Novels??
Most of this is because of simplicity. Authors probably dont want to create multiple characters to present for the mc and then write them off. Stories are usually what happened, not what might happen ie simulating real life. Giving presents, rescuing and girls being virgin are anime tropes, mc resc...

Yep, a lot of these tropes are pretty pervasive. (Which makes me think some people must LOVE them. But I clearly don't.)skybeargames wrote: ↑Tue Aug 31, 2021 1:27 am Wow Mutive, I just went over your list a couple of times against examples and it fits so many other media too like YA and romance in general

Re: What are some things you hate about romantic Visual Novels??
Oh boy...there are a number here that I despise: 1. The "destined" lovers. I get how infatuation can feel that way, but it's a problematic trope. 2. The "we show each other love by hating on each other". Teasing is fine, but when it gets to the point of negging, it's icky. And if...

Re: Alone Ending and Heart Systems
I personally really loved the asexual ending for Arcade Spirits (https://store.steampowered.com/app/910630/Arcade_Spirits/) It worked (for me) in that you didn't really lose out on anything by taking that path (other than a romance, I guess?). The story follows the same no matter who you romance, wi...

Re: How Do Revshares Work?
Much like when signing witha publisher, you'd likely write up a contract detailing when things get paid out. Echoing this, I would definitely put whatever terms you decide upon into a contract. (Even if you 100% love and trust the people you're working with, there's a HUGE advantage to spelling out...

Re: How Do Revshares Work?
What I'd probably do is either a) put an amount trigger on it (e.g. you'll disperse funds every time they hit $500 or whatever makes sense to you) or b) put in a timeline trigger (e.g. you'll disperse funds once every 1 or 3 or whatever months) This way, everyone gets paid (well...assuming the proje...

Re: Could you please review my music? Or maybe have a listen?
Since you asked (please note not especially musically gifted, but do enjoy listening!) The first (Lull) seems very tranquil to me and I liked the pipes/flute. After a point, the repetitive strain in the middle mark (maybe around 00:36 got a touch annoying to me. I might cut it to a few fewer repetit...

Re: How do you write a plot?
I found this technique to be helpful (originated on Absolute Write - the forums there are helpful, if they're ever up again...) 1. First think of what the protagonist wants (that she/he doesn't have) 2. Figure out what the protagonist has to do to get it 3. Then figure out what happens if he/she fai...

Re: Is it possible to earn $5000 a month making visual novels?
I mean, I live in the States, Even as a Starbucks worker, I was NOT raking in 45K a year (I wish, but I guess if you're working a very busy Starbucks in an expensive area and you're the general manager, 45K is plausible). You guys are counting in health insurance, PTO, other benefits but it's kind ...

Re: Is it possible to earn $5000 a month making visual novels?
Hm, even for a solo developer who do everything themselves, depending on the country they are living in, it might be too little of an amount. Like I said, $5000/month would be less than my country minimum wage once I paid my taxes... (Which is why I actually don't count on VN to make a living.) Of ...

Re: How can I get volunteers to make faster progress on a game?
There's just so many factors here that are unpredictable, it's pretty disheartening. So are you telling me even throughout everything that was said in this thread, the best I can do is say "I'd like this done by this date", and if they don't do it, just give them more time, but that the p...
