Re: ANN Answerman 2011-04-1

Hmm, I've always assumed that when VNs catch on in the West, it would be because of some big localization breakthrough. Like a high-selling critically acclaimed title with relative mainstream appeal such as 428 ~Fuusa Sareta Shibuya de getting ported to English and making waves. And if that could ha...

Re: Vote your favourite RPG battle system!

Anything but a classic RPG Maker battle. Tactical battle systems are cool. I think as long as you're trying to do something different from what everyone expects then you're on the right track.

Re: ANN Answerman 2011-04-1

I like to think of AA as adventure, or adventure with a VN presentation. Although "adventure" is a broad genre, the Japanese use the term much too broadly imo and apply it to all kinds of things I would never call adventure. But AA has the qualities I expect from an adventure--exploration/...

Re: ANN Answerman 2011-04-1

For VNs that aren't going to incorporate game elements I'd like to see more big titles follow the example of School Days and be animated as much as possible. If you're denying your audience interacting with the story that much, you can at least make it more enjoyable for them to watch. They say VN's...

Re: Dating sim vs. Regular VN

Uh... why would anyone play a romance game not for the story? To practice their pickup techniques? To enjoy the thrill of clicking buttons a whole lot? How about for fun gameplay? The original Tokimeki Memorial is not noted for having a strong story. It has a story, but who was playing it for that ...

Re: Dating sim vs. Regular VN

lemme stop you right there: the story in the given example ACTIVELY UNDERMINES THE ENTIRE EXPERIENCE, and when you have something like that, no amount of pretty graphics or good gameplay mechanics will save you in anything that would be called a romance game. It's fine to not like datesims for fail...

Re: Dating sim vs. Regular VN

Wow, TV Tropes really has everything, eh? Now it's giving advice on how to make a dating sim. Even if the assessment on that page were not as subjective as it was, it would be irrelevant to our disagreement because it's clear now from the below quote where it is that you missed my point. It's tellin...

Re: Dating sim vs. Regular VN

\ no, no, no. You can't. A straight VN is similar to a choose your own adventure book, which pretty much has negligible (if any) gameplay components. You can't really judge a VN on them, since the focus ends up being on the story more than anything else. Meanwhile, one of the criteria a dating sim ...

Re: Dating sim vs. Regular VN

^ Of course you could say the reverse about VNs. "People take it as an excuse for having less well-thought out game mechanics and having flat gameplay. VN's should have the same standards for gameplay." (No, I don't really think this, but if you can make that statement then I can make this...

Re: Why are NVG not as well recieved as RPG in USA?

There is also a portion of the western audience who will always shun the cute visual style of Japanese VNs, just as there is a portion of westerners who shun the cute visual style of anime. It's kind of like American Kirby is Hardcore . Meanwhile, I think I detect a resistance among the Japanese to ...

The list of things I love about Japan is MUCH longer than the list of things I hate. I bet everyone here can say the same.

Re: Is it possible to create a VN game with high re-play val

One thing you might consider doing is designating a few of those 13 bachelorettes as major characters to focus on in your writing. The rest can be minor characters and if after you finish the scripts for the major characters you find that you still have the energy to write more, you can start develo...

4) Heinlein novels! They're mostly dialogue anyway. It's typical to read page after page of two characters having a long intellectual conversation before you get to the next small piece of plot. Heinlein is one of the most intellectual fiction authors I know.

Re: What do you hate about Japan?

Two big things for me. - the concept of losing face A Japanese would rather not speak to you for the rest of your lives than to resolve a simple misunderstanding between the two of you if speaking up might result in "losing face". (Was gonna mention honne & tatemae too, but I guess hon...
