Re: Rules on the Visual Novel as a Medium

Anything you do is bound to annoy someone. I have a lot of choices as well. The vast majority won't affect the end of the game, but will change what happens during the game. If you play my game just to see what the ending is, then that's your loss. I'm taking the characters on a journey. You can eit...

Re: Do you like the idea of choices based on player emotion?

Oh, I agree, thus the 'some'. :) But I think it's useful to look at how the game itself may need to differ in order to best support different approaches. I certainly agree with this. I would imagine indicating consequences would be important for dating games. Something like LLTQ needs clear indicat...

Re: Do you like the idea of choices based on player emotion?

I wouldn't necessarily agree with doing things behind the scenes. It makes for a dull game if most of your elements are hidden behind the scenes. I'm not really sure how a game could become dull just because the result of interactions are not announced. Surely the player can figure out that if they...

Re: Do you like the idea of choices based on player emotion?

I've been writing with something like this in mind, but it is all done behind the scenes.
Just like in real life, it's not always obvious how our interactions with people can affect our relationships, but they do.

Re: Rules on the Visual Novel as a Medium

I'd like to put forward the idea that defining the rules for VNs may be counter-productive in some cases. Innovation happens when people think outside the box.

How can we support players?

I read about someone who modded a game's GUI to help their colourblind friend differentiate between HP, MP and EXP bars. After an update, modding became more difficult. After he explained and asked them for modding advice, the devs instead added a colourblind mode to the game. Very cool move. Are th...

Re: Complex Storywriting

I tried many methods, but settled on a simple timeline spreadsheet with key points to use as writing reference to ensure consistency.

Re: To help me with my first VN

Make something that would appeal to you. Any advice regarding what people like will probably lead to something fairly generic.

Re: So, we're here... what do we do now?

Would you want to be in a project with people who are not even a little proactive? Teams like that never complete anything and are often so disheartened by the experience that they may give up on creating VNs. I'm a new face. And that in essence is the problem I am raising here. We were all new memb...

Re: The curious xenophobia of the game engine

I spent about a month researching game engines before settling on Ren'Py. I chose it over other VN engines for a number of reasons: It uses English It has a very active, supportive English speaking community It has good reviews scattered throughout the web It looked like a realistic engine to learn ...

Re: What do you guys think of language learning games?

I was thinking that the visual novel platform would be really cool for language learning, like, with pop-up dictionaries and translations and voice over with a limited vocabulary for beginners. Would people be interested in something like this? Would it be really hard to make? Also, should the lang...

Re: Which country do you prefer otome games to take place in

"A VN set in the US" <- Hmm... OK. I'm down with that. "A VN set in Denmark" <- This sounds interesting. I don't know much about Denmark, but it's cool to experience another culture vicariously. "A VN set in Japan" <- Ugh. Another one. Even if it is one of the rare case...

Re: Would you read fanfiction of your own game/project?

Knowing that fanfiction of something I wrote existed would make my day! I'd probably spend a fair amount of time trying to figure out how to slip that fact into conversation with everyone I talk to. But deep down I know I'm probably not going to like the actual contents of the fanfiction. It may be ...

Re: Most Difficult Thing About Visual Novels

I guess I would have to say time as well. It's difficult to find a reasonable amount of time when I'm not too tired to focus. If I can, then everything else becomes a lot easier.
