I've never played an otome game, but that's more because I've never come across one that was interesting to me rather than I'm not interested in the genre. You could just do both and appease everyone, provided you give the appropriate reason. Two of my main characters are Japanese-American, while the others are your typical black and white folks.

What turned me off was the 4chan feel. Earthbound was a quirky RPG parody with pot-smoking hippie enemies, and it was fantastic. Mark Leung had those same enemies but just came off as immature.
