Tl;dr , I would suggest that if you're writing something that sounds like a cliché, browse TVTropes for it. If you find it, then try to vary it from the standard course. I would add, "if it's an overused trope". Just finding a trope on TVTropes doesn't mean it's used a lot, or a bad thing...

I agree with trooper, the pronoun should be based on what the character believes, not on what is actually true. If, though, you are writing NOT from the 'perspective' of any character, then the proper pronoun should be used. I'm assuming that you're writing limited third person omniscient, however. ...

I make use of em dashes, but I think that having ellipses certainly aids writing, even if it's used incorrectly. It's a good way to state that a character trails off their sentence without having the narrator explicitly saying so.
