I'd be more inclined to think of the "High School Slice-of-Life" as less of a theme and more of a setting. That may seem like quibbling over words -- but many quality VNs set primarily inside a high school deal with themes outside of the general, cliched High School experience. Or are able...

I've seen it done well and done poorly. In VNs, it seems like it's best to clearly inform the viewer there's a perspective shift. It's an excellent story. I wouldn't necessarily categorize it as a "game", because I think a game implies interactivity past mouse-clicking (choice, et cetera). But, in the same vein, I think that's the piece's strongest suit -- it's so compelling, mouse-clicking is all I really felt like ...
