Usually a mix of softglow (glow radius in the negatives somewhere) and gaussian blurs works for me. Then again, I haven't finished a game yet so I'm not sure if it looks good to anyone other than myself.

From a size standpoint, which is more efficient: seperate sprites for clothing and characters, or making multiple character sprites for each outfit/expression? If that made any sense. Based on the discussions on size I've seen here, it looks like I should try to make my game as small as possible. ^ ^;
