Pandora's Box (my second renpy game)

#1 Post by terrorbullgames »

Hi gang!

About this time last year, I published my first ever Ren'Py game - Ewe of the Falklands. The response here was really supportive and welcoming. I warned you at the time that this would only encourage me and indeed it did. I've finally got around to doing another game:
I'm particularly proud of the 'dynamic madness' in this game, but you may disagree.

Anyway, I'd really love your feedback, comments and suggestions. Enjoy!

Mac: http://www.terrorbullgames.co.uk/games/ ... ox-mac.zip
Linux: http://www.terrorbullgames.co.uk/games/ ... 86.tar.bz2

P.S. There's a small amount of profanity in the game. I don't think it's enough to warrant an age limit or warning, but just so you're aware. More disturbing than a few swear words is probably the overall unescapable feeling of dread :)

Ohhhh my life, the warping images depending on the choices REALLY got to me. That is so clever. So, so clever... I'm still kind of freaked out from this. XD

Thanks, Ris! I'm glad you liked that - and also a little sorry that it freaked you out. It took me a while to get it working, but basically I have an ever-changing variable that adds or subtracts by 1 on most choices. Every time this happens, I then make a call to a standard function that updates the assets (music, images etc.).

If I had more time, I'd like to get into that even more and start changing words, or even the appearance of the text. Stuff that would really make you question the whole game, not just the contents. I had a lot of fun making this!

Geeze, the title screen alone is creepy and freaky. I can't wait to see what the rest of it is like.

Oh man. I was playing this yesterday and it is very awesome and creepy xD
I kept getting stuck in a loop of waking up again and having to try again... I'm still working on it. I had to stop playing after a few tries because it was very dark and late at night and I was getting too freaked out.

I love the visitor person! Hopefully I'll get to an ending soon? I'm not very good at this game... OTL

Oh man. I knew I shouldn't be playing this, but my curiosity got the better of me. It was creepy, and yet very interesting. Good job on the warping of sprites and all, it was thoroughly horrifying.

My favorite part was "GET OFF MY BED!!" xD I thought that was totally awesome!!

I'd love to know how you came up with the idea for it.

I enjoyed playing Ewe of the Falklands a lot and this is fantastic too. I like your games because they are highly original and completely unpredictable; A much needed break from the stereotypical Ren'py dating simulation formula and very refreshing to see. I'm glad the community encouraged you to publish another game - I hope to see more in the future! I just managed to open the box of Pandora's matches and I'm thinking about replaying. I too loved the "dynamic madness", it's definitely something you should be proud of - I think it's one of my favorite aspects of the game, but I enjoyed it a lot overall! I also think the sound effects and graphics were very successful at creating an interesting atmosphere.

One more thing, though! I feel as if I'm obligated to warn some of you. I decided to play the game although it's 1:27 (I should definitely be doing my homework or sleeping, but procrastination is what I'm good at) and turned my headphones all the way up, which obviously isn't ever a good idea. Especially if you're easily frightened like me; the title screen alone is enough to make me feel a bit uncomfortable, but having played it through, I'm now totally creeped out and I'm probably not able to fall asleep the next couple of hours. I blame you, terrorbullgames! :) But I suppose that just shows that the game is very well-executed.

... But seriously, turn on the lights before you unzip it.

I enjoyed it, thanks - the atmosphere of the game is made well...))
The nurse's eyes - they are realy frightening...
But I think that it will let players understand the game better if you'll give a bit of explanation or make a list of references for it.

Oh man, I love this. It even has Dante!
Still trying to find an ending, thinking the picture should be a clue as well as Beatrice...

*Edit: Oh man, never thought classical music could be so scary. It somehow gave me goosebumps in the end.
I opened the box, though, I guess that should be the ending?
