Okay, I just finished this game and I have to tell you I was very exited to play it, I mean looking at this forum the game has 16 pages! I mean wow a lot of people must really like this game so I had to play it. So I've played it and I've gotten all the endings and I have to say I'm a bit disappointed. Don't get me wrong the game is OK but going by the hype of 16 pages and look someone just made a walkthrough for it! I thought man there must be something to this, something awesome, something never seen before. Again I say the game wasn't bad, it was pretty much any Disney movie I saw growing up, all cute and fluffy with very little story depth. I thought after reading all the wonderful things people had to say that the game would be epic, something on the level of a final fantasy or castlevania but instead what I get is sesame street. Now if I'm wrong please tell me but I thought that this form was at least 16 and up for the most part? Now if I've stumbled into someone first grade class then ignore what I just wrote and I'll be sure to lower my expectations from now on.

@Mr. L

Isn't that a bit harsh? You're basically accusing the creator (who surely spent a lot of time and effort making this game) of possessing no more skill than a first grader. Many people liked this game (and I doubt that's just because they have low expectations) and just because it didn't meet your expectations doesn't mean it's bad. Maybe you should think about what you're saying next time.
If you want something like Final Fantasy or Castlevania go and buy a game like that, but don't expect it from a free game. You should appreciate the creator for the time and work he/she put in that game and not complain. Playing a game someone made of their own free will without any reward whatsoever is a privilege, not a right.

So how about you think before writing the next time you don't like something? Being polite isn't hard. :)

Bellice, I don't remember saying that the game was bad, in fact it was very cute. Cute and fluffy and that can't be all bad right? I say again I didn't mean to be harsh at all, it was just surprising that something that took them..3-4 years was it and that was the final product?

You are right about one thing a lot of people did like this game and hold it to the highest regard, I do apologize for believing all the hype that was all my doing I really should know better.

News at a 10:

A hobbyist game, which was made in the author's free time, does not have the production quality of a big-budget, professionally developed title which was worked on, full-time, by a staff of 100+ professionals.

Well, something like this: "Now if I'm wrong please tell me but I thought that this form was at least 16 and up for the most part? Now if I've stumbled into someone first grade class then ignore what I just wrote and I'll be sure to lower my expectations from now on." does imply that the game was not up to the standarts of people who are above first grade. If that isn't insulting I don't know what it is...

Have you ever tried making a game like that? It's a lot of work, I can tell you that, especially if you're only one person. Not to mention that some people still have something akin to a social life and can't work on a project like that non-stop.^^

Shiranai, so you're saying that just because a non professional made the game that they are free to release anything they want and we have to like it? The only reason that I thought that the game may be of some kind of quality is because of all the wonderful things people had to say about it. Maybe if people would stop kissing the creators feet just for merely finishing the game and give them due credit for the game itself people wouldn't get the wrong idea.

bellice, no I haven't tried making a game like "that". If I were to spend any of my time making a game I think that I would concentrate on a good story before leaping into renpy. Now bellice, what's this "akin to a social life and can't work on a project like that non-stop.^^" mean? Are you making excuses for them now?

This is an old game, that's why it has 16 pages. It was also one of the longer games when it was released.
I really hate it when people say "kissing feet" or in IRC terms "c*cksucking" just because you support someone strongly who doesn't happen to be a genius.

That's because you are supporting mediocrity

On one hand, I can understand the need to give honest feedback, and if you disagree with other people's opinions you should be free to express yours.
On the other hand, you based your opinion on 16 pages of feedback that were collected on a game that has been around for three years (the first post was made in 2007), and has had a lot of time to collect opinions on here.

It would have possibly helped if you just expressed your opinion on the game, without giving the number of pages this thread has much importance.

That said, it seems pointless to start a discussion on this thread, really.

I think you don't understand the point of "free" and "project done in spare time."

I don't support mediocrity. In fact, a pox upon the heads of people who think that mediocrity is a way to live without striving for better.

But when it's something you're doing for people for free, you do what you have time to do. If you want to pay the above game-maker to spend all her time on this and then sell it, please do. If not, I'd take a wee bit of a chill pill.

Critique is much different than "you suck what is this first grade sesame street edge edge edgy edge".

No, I am saying that it is not fair to:

1. Set your expectations based on the number of pages of in the comments.
2. Expect that a free game, done by a hobbyist, to have similar scope and production value to a Final Fantasy game.
3. Strongly imply that this game could have been made by a first grader.
4. Accuse people of kissing the creator's feet.

A non-professional is free to release anything they want.
You are free to dislike it. You are even free to say so.

However, your tone basically comes off as if you set your own expectations that the game would blow you away. When it failed to meet your expectations, your criticism of why you didn't like it isn't very constructive. While again, you are free to make these comments, others are free to call you out on them.

For what it is worth, I agree that Elven Relations is not a commercial quality game. At the same time, I never expected it to be.

If you think you can make a better game, then stop criticizing others and do it. Then we can talk.

While I understand where you come from with that comment, I don't agree.

It doesn't take someone who has some games under their belt to criticise a game, anyone is free to express their opinion. The problem has been summarised very well by Lord Shiranai in his post: the critique wasn't constructive at all, and was based on the poster's disappointment based on their own wrong expectations.

It is fairly dangerous to only suggest that one can't talk unless they can do better, because this excuse may be used on anyone who doesn't agree with you, not just someone who is actually being unreasonable with their expectations.
