This is one of the hardest puzzles I've ever played.....It's really difficult....But it's fun all the same :). It was creepy to. I jumped a few times and almost scared my own mother when I screamed once

I've uploaded a new version! This new version should be compatible with your game saves, so feel free to "update".
This update should adress a number of issues.

Version 1.2 changelog:
- Paintings now update when you leave a room
- Certain puzzles no longer reset (safe, valves, canvas)
- Fixed an issue during the asylum hallway
- Minor changes to the ending narration, for clarity
- Added .2 seconds to the prompts in the action sequence
- Fixed an issue where players would spontaneously combust
- Reduced pass requirements for said sequence on each difficulty
- Added extra graphical hint to clues for canvas puzzle
- Fixed a typo that would cause space-time continuity errors
- Added .1 to the version number

Wow, this sounds like a lot of improvements everyone will enjoy! I'm kind of sad I missed the spontaneous combustion, though . . . that sounds really exciting. ;-) I appreciate you taking the time to fix issues players have noticed.

The paintings change especially helps a lot, thanks! :D However, it does also leave me befuddled about how to change the woman's painting. Does it still depend on
doing different activities based on certain times of the day?

The woman's painting depends on
what time of night it is
.

Sorry, didn’t have time to touch the game since last time so I can’t give a screenshot yet (and maybe the new version settles the matter anyway).

But guess what, we (well, mostly my boyfriend who has a site about visual novel) asked someone from a French videogames magazine to play The Madness and the person accepted :D . So here is a little insert from the new edition :

It’s not much but we hope it’ll give your game more visibility ! :)

I posted a review of this game on my sister's video game blog, here. I tried to keep it pretty non-spoilery! :-D

Wait, someone has actually been able to beat the game?

For now, my main focus is on the paintings puzzle until I figure out the correct combination for the safe or correct areas to mark off on the map (I can skip them, and I have created a separate slot, but I still want to solve them on my own so I've also created another slot for those puzzles--if nothing else, in case I want to re-play the game). And I think I'm stumbling over the correct painting combination, or at least how to keep the woman's painting consistent with the right combination without skipping time to the point where I get sent back to the beginning.

This is what I got from the story in the bedroom:
It takes place in the summer (or "the end of summer"--the exact phrasing used is "If he lived to see the end of summer"), in a sandy area with no mention of water which makes me think "desert", and it's either at sundown or at night. I think Jack Thornwood is supposed to be either British or American, but I'm not sure--presumably British? I walk around playing "Off to Osaka" (love the music choices from Kevin MacLeod, btw!), drink English Breakfast tea, and wash my hands to the point of insanity.
EDIT: Also, out of curiosity, who did the artwork for the soap opera on channel 2? The style looks vaguely familiar, like I've seen it somewhere around the forums.

Ha ha, yeah, my husband and I managed to beat it, though we did have to look at the source code for a two puzzles... so now I feel it's my duty to help everyone else out. :-D

You are on the right track. If you want to "end the day" without changing time much, try:
clicking on the barometer several times. It doesn't make much time pass, but it does end the day sooner. I think you want sundown, the second painting.
For the man's painting,
I think that's America (whiskey)

Woah, that's amazing! Thank you guys so much!

I know, I was pretty amazed too!
Guess I'll have to find solace in the thought that nobody will beat the new The Loop found as a bonus text adventure.

For the tv shows, I used art from the Creative Commons board.
The characters on channel 2 were done by 15385bic.

I was really under the impression that Sherrifs were a Wild West thing

Fun secret: In the first sequence, there are several ways to alter the natural flow of timeing out.
You may have noticed the Barometer draining your action points. However, you can eat an apple to gain some. Taking the pills rewinds time.
I also added a few "action points" (meaningful actions before timeout) in the latest update.

Yep, finally figured out he was American.
And...I beat the puzzle! But...er...yeah, you're a little too good at building atmosphere. At this particular section, I've chickened out and quit three times before going downstairs. There's nothing visually frightening, it's just...ugh, the atmosphere and tension and the protagonist, is just...*shudder* I'll just keep going at it...little by little...

Just a heads up, I said the update would be save-game compatible, but it turns out it might not be. I think this might be if your old save was at a point that was altered, but I can't be sure where the problem is.

I suppose you could always start anew and fire up some cheat codes to get back to where you were. I'm sure with a little effort you can squeeze them out of one of the beta testers. Consider it a bonus puzzle.

I had a quick look at my code, and.... well, I made a very stupid error in the latest fix. Another fix is coming.
