Fae [fairy tale, GxB, KN] [NaNoRenO 2014]

So *pretends it's still March* I proudly present my NaNoRenO project.



The story starts as our brave heroine Lin is sent out on a dangerous quest to deliver a bottle of ginseng tincture to Grandfather Shi living on a faraway (about two hours ride) mountain.
It's a sort-of-Chinese fairy tale. Unfortunately, there're no choices. The wordcount is around 6k.



First of all, meet Grandfather Shi, as I feel he doesn't get enough of in-game screen time




Other characters from right to left - Lin's reliable and smart older brother Yu, his pretty but bothersome fiancee Xia and Qiang, a stranger Lin meets along the way, who really needs her help even if he doesn't look like it.

I'm not sure if I actually got to the ending?? Qiang was leaving and so Lin ran up to him and then the screen just went back to the menu??? Is it meant to be like that? ):

This was really good! I loved the art style which grabbed my interest first but the story writing and dialogue was so well written and entertaining too. I knew where the story was going but it was still so cute. Enjoyed the setting as well.

Loved the presentation. The sprites are adorable, and the frame on the backgrounds reminded me of stage curtains, which I think helped set the right mood for the story.

But the ending is WAY too abrupt, especially since the story is predictable. (Predictable in the comforting sense of a familiar fairy tale, not in a bad way.) I really wish there was more resolution for the characters.

Just finished playing this adorable game. It's the first in such a long time. Haha. But anyway, it was really, really cute, however, I kinda didn't... get the ending...? I was left thinking, "Wait, what?" when the "The End" screen came up. Haha, nevertheless, it was really cute, and the story was pretty charming as well. Like Sheridan, I too wish that there was some resolution for the characters. Haha.

Okay. Now played. (I've finally gotten through a few games).
Visually this is spectacular. The backgrounds are beautiful. And as I've spent a good deal of time in China, it really seems accurate too.

Because of the coloring (which is wonderful), I would have liked the text font larger. Some of the larger blocks of text become harder on the eyes to read.

I loved Qiang. And that raven on his shoulder. So stoic, and yet such a loser. ^^

The fox spirits! Ah, this really is a Chinese fairytale.

I laughed out loud when Xia was keen on the kissing thing and Yu had to stop her.

And where Lin told everyone about Yu being a peeping tom on the girls at the hot springs.

If I were you I'd replace 'cafe' with 'tea shop'. Cafes are a western thing that have only just sprung up. In ancient China however there would have been tea shops though. Or restaurant or 'eating house' (fanguan) since they have food. That might work too.

Xia: "I just happen to need a new dress." Yu: "No you don't." - Hahaha. That amused me too.

It was adorable at the end - but it could have been made better by a CG where we actually see Lin (and the momentous kiss at the end).

We're kind of left the whole time wondering what Lin looks like.

The only other thing is: it's short. I might give a think on it and maybe will be able to come up with a second chapter to it or something... unless you just wanted to leave it as it is. That's up to you.

But I did like it. And it made me laugh. So great work!
