If it's based on Self-fulfilling prophecy, the curse is real due to death of a man who jumped. Why would the locals started this rumor? What are the target audience and what are they trying to prove? Can the dead experience self-fulfilling prophecy, afraid not. Ahem, I mean, I interpret the story as teaching common sense. It can be view as self-fulfilling prophecy while living.
