Can't play it on my laptop, resolution is too high (1024 x768) my screen size is only 1024x600

Yes that's an issue I'm having with some people :(
I know a possible solution, maybe I should bother Pytom for a new feature, but he's going to kill me. Asking doesn't hurt though :twisted:

What's the next 'standard' resolution for visual novels?

640 x 480 => 800 x 600 =>1024 x 768 600 (for widescreen netbooks)
I know Sketchbook used 1024 x 640, which fits just perfectly on fullsize widescreen computers (16:10)

Here something you can try.

1)Download the "make screen smaller.rpy"
2)Put it along with the other rpy (should be in Heileen/Heileen/game)
3)Run game.

If this works it will make the screen become 1024x600 so you lose the topmost 168. If it works. Yeah, so even if it works you still don't get good results.

There's a better way if Heileen uses renpy 6.9. You just need to put environment.txt in the folder with the exe(should be in Heileen/Heileen). If it works, the screen would be scaled down and you won't lose the topmost 168 unlike the first method. If it works.

Yes I know about environment, but in another thread I asked our mighty Pytom if an automatic solution would be possible. Asking regular people to perform those tasks (putting a .txt inside the directory) wouldn't be a good solution :)

Yeah, I know cause that's where I got the knowledge that RENPY_(something) can scale the screen size(I didn't know before) but I was replying to usul since he wants to play the game.

Well how about this?

Code: Select all

init 999:
    if not persistent.environment:

        $ config.screen_width = 600
        $ config.screen_height = 400

label start: # or main menu or presplash or whatever that is executed first
    if not persistent.environment:
        menu:
            "Select resolution"
            "800x600":
                $ resolution="0.5"
            "1048x786":
                $ resolution="1.0"
            "2000x1000":
                $ resolution="2.0"

        python:
            blargh = open(renpy.game.basepath + "/../environment.txt", "w")
            blargh.write("RENPY_SCALE_FACTOR=" + resolution)
            blargh.close()
            persistent.environment=True
            renpy.jump("_quit")
Just a concept. You'll need to make it better yourself.

FYI, the scaling request is being tracked here:

Nice :)
Well, she doesn't talk well about the game... but it's a great marketing push for me nonetheless. After all, after reading this paragraph:
Most of the women aboard dress and act in a way that would have been unacceptable at the time, and the characters have surprisingly modern views on such topics as slavery, class status, lesbianism, and polyamory.
who wouldn't jump to my site to download it?? :lol:

BTW, I don't understand why they insist on the "lack of historical accuracy", after seeing a cat that talks to the player? 8)

To Tom: great about the resolution fix!

I guess you should say "in a historic style setting" to make sure no one makes a mistake of what kind of game is it.

You don't want to be the next "Giant Enemy Crab" right? So just try make sure it's clear how you're marketing it.

Yes, thanks for the tip. Not being native english speaker is another big problem for me, since I didn't know which were the exact words to use, so I just put "historical setting" in the PR, thinking it would mean "historic style setting".

It could be worse... I notice in one of the comments that someone has run across my two games, and can't tell whether "Ewan" is a guy's name or not :mrgreen:

That's amazing, 2/2 on gamasutra 8) even if in this case she doesn't speak to well about the game, but she has valid points. It was really my first attempt and I wasn't sure I was able to make such kind of games (especially for the language... damn). Anyway this motivates me to do an amazing sequel! (but not this year lol)

I didn't expect to ever see an advertisement for Heileen on a website. But I saw one just a few minutes ago on i-Mockery. Just thought you should know.
