Nobody Understands MIA [Cyberpunk][Puzzle][Comedy][NaNo17]

#1 Post by kenibatz »

Yello!

I made a short game for NaNo 2017: Nobody Understands MIA

Summary: During a codebreaker exam, an aspiring but uncertain cryptographer discovers an odd event that opens the door to a conspiracy that involves a friend--the helpful (but stuck in the 80s) Artificial Intelligence, MIA.

It's a really short game. Maybe 10-15 minutes long. But it sets the mood for future stories and games in MIA's cyberpunk--with a touch of the 80s--world. (I spent hours listening to 80s music and reading up on 80s slang just to find out who MIA was).

It's also a sort of tutorial for a simple cipher technique. If you're a fan of Gravity Falls like me, you'll probably like it. Please like it.

Oh! And it has a couple of easter eggs, too!

Hope you enjoy the game! Please let me know what you think. Criticisms and suggestions are always welcome. Like, totally. :D

Thanks for checking the game out, Zelan! I hope you like time travel, coz you're going to the 80s! 1980s and 2080s! :D

You have excellent taste in movies, my friend. :) Try using that name choice in the screenshot when MIA asks you for your name.

The game is JUHDW! (I'm hopeless, I know :D)

Actually I've learnt Caesar cipher recently, so it was heartwarming to see it in the game ^_^
I couldn't decipher MIA's "violet mode" messages :c They're not ciphered in Caesar? Or maybe it's complete gibberish? :D
It's really nice to see something educational in games :)

Thank you Kelanael! I'm KDSSB that you liked it! :D

Totally agree with you; educational games are awesome! If you like informative games, you might like my other game, Natalie, too.

Regarding your question:
the message is also encrypted but it will be revealed in the follow-up story.

Then I'm completely looking forward to your new games! (and I'll try to decipher it with other methods I've learnt, even if I know it won't be successful :D)

Thank you, Kelanael! I have more games and stories to be developed. You can bookmark my site or follow me on itch.io for updates, if you like. :D And if you want more cryptography fun, check out Gravity Falls. :D

Just got done playing it! I'm pretty proud to say I got all of them right on the first try, which is cool because I've only done something like this once before (and that was with the aid of an alphabet chart).

I loved Mia! She's so charming with that retro language of hers. I'm excited to see future codebreaking games with her. ^_^

(I did use Inigo Montoya as my player name. *thumbs up*)

Yo, what's crackin'? Had to check this out cause cyberpunk is like, totally my thing! And I gotta say, it was ace, man!

Loved the 80s retro vibes and the hip use of color. The music was flash too, and of course the puzzles! Crypto and cypherpunk really speak to me. (I guess I'm an old-school jargon file hacker in the end!) I felt so dexter when I finally figured out that
Polybius
thing ;)

Rock on, homefry! We need more 80s retro cyberpunk edtech visual novels like this. Peace out!
Current project: Simulacrum Duorum Graduis ~ Dragonfire, a near-future dating sim / pseudo-rpg (demo is out!)

A little short, but I like the look of the game. I also like the idea of using the platform as a teaching tool. :)

That is pretty cool, congrats! (Actually, I still get the answers mixed up, sometimes. )

Did you like the puzzle aspect of the game? Was it fun? I plan to add more similar brain teasers in future games. :D

I'm glad you like her! MIA came out of nowhere. I was writing a different story for NaNoReNo, but I was already on the last week of March and my draft was still a mess. MIA appeared and convinced me that her story would be "like, easier and more fun to turn into a game".

I will be sure to put more reference jokes in the future. There are three more secret names you can try to discover. Two of them are somehow tied to "My Name Is". :D

Yo! Much Respect for going the extra mile to solve the other code. And for the 80s-speak! Aces! *high five*

Thanks for appreciating the game, homefry! More stories will be definitely made!

And respect for your avatar, too! Raistlin is one of my favorite characters. :D
