Minion! - A Fantasy/Humor Visual Novel - Free Download

#1 Post by Mutive »

I've completed my first willing-to-show-the-world game!

It's uploaded at: https://mutive.itch.io/minion

Short description:

Serve as a minion to a powerful sorceress queen. Your decisions will cause the kingdom to flourish - or be destroyed!

Minion totals over 30K words and has 11 unique endings.

If anyone is willing to play/leave feedback (it is free to play), I would very much appreciate it! I am always trying to improve! (Although good reviews are also very nice. ^_^)

fun game! i have not reached most endings yet, but my first ending was
asking for "world peace" from the genie
.

the music was very well picked. the bg images were too full of artifacts (too low resolution?). the book reading sections were very funny! definitely added a lot to the game. other than that i cant think of much to comment on.

Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed! (And thanks for downloading + playing + commenting!)

Art is definitely a bit of a challenge for me, as for this, I just used various free assets I found online. Hopefully with time I can either improve upon it or find artists to work with! (As this was mostly a "I'm trying to figure out how to use the engine" type game, I didn't want to recruit other people.)

I'm glad that you enjoyed the music, too! JAdamsMusic was kind enough to let me use his work which I agree is terrific!

I played this a while ago but forgot to leave a review, sorry!

I remember that Minion! first appeared a bit low-production to me but quickly showed itself to have a dedicated writer behind it. As a writer, I know how difficult it must've been to remain motivated to come up and write that much seemingly random and route-based events in such a large bulk. I'm certain I haven't seen all of it, but I saw a lot of writing and then a lot more. Then I got my first death and played again, only to see that the dragon wasn't an end-event rather than a halfway point. Very impressive for a story without a lineair storyline, to tell so much.

It also gave me the illusion of free will that a good interactive VN needs, I could be a villain and be a minion to my queen instead of being forced into one route after a few questions. The events were clearly determined by my actions though and it actually felt like I had an effect on the world rather than it throwing pre-decided events at me regardless of what I did. I don't know how true this is, but that's what it felt like during the first 1-2 playthroughs and that's a real important and good thing to accomplish in a VN.

Awww, thank you so much for the kind words! It was 0 budget, so not surprised that this was your impression. :) (I really do need to come up with better assets, but have started working on a new game, so am being lazy about the old one, alas.)

But I'm glad that you liked the illusion of free will! (To me, that's always super important in a game, so I do what I can to create it!) There are 11 endings, all of which have very different effects on the "world", so to the best of my limited writing/programming ability, yes, your choices do matter! (I mean, clearly there are limits...but eh, I do what I can with the world that I have.)

Anyway, thank you yet again for your review! It keeps me inspired for the next game! <3

This is delightful! Big fan of wacky humor. And I really like the way choices affect options available and dialog results for later events, even though the events themselves are the same. (For instance, if I've been encouraging her to be evil she sometimes has a more evil response to the same choice! And of course,
how you lose fights if you haven't trained, or can't think of a good solution if you haven't done some reading.)
That sort of thing keeps events from feeling repetitive.
Something I'd suggest is a (spoiler-tagged?) endings list, whether as part of the game or just listed on the webpage. I'd like to get all eleven endings, but a couple times I'm not sure whether something counts as a different one. And that way if I can't think of any other things to try I can look up endings and get ideas of other choice combos. Or maybe a "walkthrough" where you make suggestions like reading/evil, or town/generous, or financially responsible or what have you.
I definitely look forward to your next game!

Thanks so much for the kind review! I really do need to put together a walkthrough at some point. (I've been busy with the game I've been working on for a year and a half now, so have been more or less neglecting Minion!...but a walkthrough would be pretty easy to do!)

I've just posted a walk through for six of the endings at: viewtopic.php?f=55&t=55481

(Also, it's amazing how much you learn doing this! I feel like a lot of the choices that seemed super intuitive to me when I built this game are...not so much now. But I see this as some great learnings to take with me to future games!!!)

I just updated with the final five endings, so if anyone for some odd ball reason *really* cares about getting all 11, it's all explained. (Maybe not super clearly, but happy to answer questions!)
