The Mind's Eclipse [SciFi] [Exploration] [Dark]
Posted: Thu Jan 25, 2018 2:05 pm
Hey everyone! I am super excited to share that The Mind's Eclipse has finally released!
What is The Mind’s Eclipse?
The CORE, a private research station, 2352. Celebrity scientist Jonathan Campbell awakens to this fallen utopia and must search for his loved ones - with the help of L, a mysterious companion.
The Mind's Eclipse is a science-fiction visual novel featuring hand-drawn scenes in black and white, and emotional narrative-driven gameplay. Players will uncover the mystery of the Eclipse and its side-narratives by exploring, searching through logs and journals, and piecing together what happened to the CORE whilst searching for Jonathan's family.
Features:
-An interactive fiction in stark black and white, with morally gray characters
-With the help of a mysterious companion, explore a fallen utopia in search for your loved ones and uncover the mystery of the Eclipse
-Piece together what led to the CORE's fall from journals and chat logs
-No dating? No Problem. Every environment is interactive, pulling the player into a science fiction world worth exploring
-Beware COSy
What do you hope people take away from their game?
People will play this game and then, a week later, I want them to be doing laundry, walking the dog, whatever, and I want them to still have the game’s story on their minds. I want them to be pondering the character's motivations, sifting through the dialogue in their heads.
What do you think is the most unique feature of the game?
Many novels have been written that explore humanity's fascination and rejection of death, but the visual novel format gave us the opportunity to tell many tiny stories and let the player uncover them one by one in an immersive way.
TME is special in that the story takes seriously the personal and human consequences of technology and immortality, and tries to examine a family that is caught in a web of uncertainty with regard to this new frontier of existence. In a universe where we could live forever, what does this mean for the human? For a family? For a father? For a daughter? For a lover?
TME puts the moral and existential ambiguity at the forefront and simply lets the characters tell their own stories and offer their own arguments. I think this is a powerful way to examine issues of morality and technology in a way that sci-fi too often neglects.
I’m not convinced this is for me:
The first 20 minutes of this game are playable as a demo! We believe you’ll know at the end of it, if this game is for you! https://themindseclipse.itch.io/the-minds-eclipse
Previews and Reviews:
"The Mind’s Eclipse is a phenomenal visual novel that’ll pull you in and quickly ensnares you in its story, full of strange characters and stranger settings. " - IndieHangover

“The game’s visual style and atmosphere look excellent” - Kotaku

“A visual novel that touts emotional and intense narrative moments” - KillScreen

“Through its combination of hand-drawn scenes and atmospheric music, The Mind's Eclipse manages to not only be intriguing, but sometimes also rather haunting.”

“With environments decorated with pro-Eclipse propaganda that warns you about The Sickness, emails referring to speeches that call for revolution, and wonderfully weird inclusions of things like the Living Toy shop and VR bars that people use to fuel their virtual reality addiction by modifying their memories or using other people’s memories. There is an incredible amount of depth and world-building for players to explore if they take the time.”

Anything else?
It’s a visual novel in that its interactive fiction. You click on some things and read a lot of text.
However, I spent about two years making this game and still get chills when I play through the game. I believe if you have a passing interest in science fiction or transhumanism, you will find the story fascinating.
*Steam Note: Right now the launch discount doesn't appear in the store, but if you go to purchase the game, the 20% launch discount should be applied. We are working with Valve to fix this.
